Ahhh, good, all is well in the Emotiva Lounge Universe that ends well. Remember the movie, "What About Bob?", starring Bill Murray? Enough said. ;D

So what does the 5508 offer, other than XT32, neoX and 9.2, that the 7005 doesn't have?

Yep, and heat is the enemy of electronics.

Despite what Bob says, the Marantz seems to be the better unit at a lower price. Does XT32 improve SQ or just have better auto eq? The Onkyo is certainly the queen of bells and whistles, but does it sound the same as the Marantz or somehow worse? Is there a real difference in SQ of pre/pros?

I own the Marantz and I love it. I have never heard an Onkyo piece that I liked. YMMV.

I own a Marantz 5005 receiver and the Marantz SQ is superb IMHO. I didn't find the same with Onkyo or Denon. YMMV of course.

Never heard either of those AVR's but if XT32 in the Onkyo is as good as it is in my Denon then thats what i would go with in a heartbeat! It made a HUGE improvement in our HT. Not only with the subs, but also in the way each channel interacts with the other. Wished there was a Marantz product with XT32, I'd love to give that a try.

Don't forget Anthem MRX Receivers used as a Pre-Pro. They have excellent SQ and ARC is top notch as well. I've only had my Marantz for a couple of weeks and I enjoy it but I still miss my Anthem. Plus it can be had for $950 including the 9.25%sales tax. The Marantz sound is cleaner but also leaner than the Anthem. The Anthem has a nice warm natural sound to it. Dynamics and Resolution are slightly better on the Marantz. The Anthem also sounded just slightly strained when cranked up, but I do miss that Anthem sound. The Anthem D2V would be my pre-amp of choice if I could swing it, but too rich for me. So unless I win the lottery, I'll probably stick with the Marantz.

I truly wish that the 7005 had Audyssey MultEQ XT32.
* But for some other people it simply don't matter at all.

I used to have the Onkyo 5507 and then the Marantz AV7005. To this day, the Marantz is the best sounding Pre-Pro I have owned and heard.
Functions perfect all the time.

The exact opposite would make much more sense.

So what does the 5508 offer, other than XT32, neoX and 9.2, that the 7005 doesn't have? THX Ultra 2 Plus certification. Three Texas Instruments Aureus 32-bit DSP chips. Six TI Burr-Brown PCM-1795 32-bit/192kHz DACs. ISF Video certification. ...Just to name few. _________________ * If you're serious about two-channel Stereo listening, then you have a separate system; me truly think. ** And if you are a Surround Sound Audio Guru, you just want the latest and most sophisticated Surround Processing. *** And if you want the very best Picture, you make sure that the Video processor is PURE in it's letting video signals flow freely without any failed HD & SD tests.

The Marantz is good enough in Pure Direct mode that you may find yourself not needing a seperate two channel set-up.
