i wonder about those guys. it seems to be the same hash and sound over and over again. for long time rockers they're hardly breaking any new ground. when i hear them on the radio i honestly can't tell one song from another any more. same ol same ol. i just saw that they put out that new cd. interesting feedback from you. that's sad. for as long as they've been around you'd think they could get it right. St. Anger was a nightmare recording-wise IMO.

St. Anger was a nightmare recording-wise IMO. The songs themselves are great. This is easily their best album since Justice IMO. I've read differing opinions on the engineering. The mixing engineer(s) claims the clipping was in the master tapes and nothing could be done, others say this isn't true since there are early demos that don't show this, and that it was mixed compressed and too loud like everything else these days.

Evanescence: The Open Door
What a disappointment. This may be the worst sounding recording I have heard in years. I really liked this band after hearing them live on the Family Values tour. But this CD is horribly, horribly compressed to the point where at times it sounds like a wall of distortion, and whoever produced this thing should be immediately taken out to a few real rock and roll shows so he might remember what music is supposed to sound like. The CD sounds like amateur hour at the iMac home recording studio, with gobs of synthesized strings glopped onto every track, seemingly as if the producer discovered that by pressing one or two keys on a synth he, too, could pretend to be "part of the band." It gets very oppressive and is completely unnecessary. If you listen through the muck there is some really great music here, and some outstanding singing from Amy Lee. But it's too much effort for not enough payoff. If they ever remix this and release a "naked" version (that is not compressed on setting 100%) it would be a great addition to any hard rock library. As it is, though, it's an iTunes purchase for the one or two "hits."

Metallica : Death Magnetic
Hmm. Not much new here, which I'm sure some fans will call an improvement over some of their attempts to be more "commercial." James Hetfield still can't sing, Kirk Hammet still can't play like Dave Mustane, and the production still sounds like everything was set to 11. 2.5 stars out of 5 from me, worth a listen but probably not much repeat value. I'm sure it will be a multi-platinum seller and Rolling Stone will say "Metallica is BACK!!" Now excuse me while I go spin the Deftones.

Yes, the engineering is horrible (see my earlier post), but the songs themselves are definitely "old" Metallica.
