I finally ordered the XPA-5 last Thursday and since my receiver doesn't have pre-outs I ordered the UMC-1 too. I got it today, hooked it all up and plugged in the mic to run emo-q. The speakers got extremely loud, so loud I had to leave the room next to it. I knew it would be different then my Denon calibration but didn't understand why it was so loud. When my center was finished, it made a weird drop out noise and went dead. Then the rest of my speakers went through emo-q. At the end, it didn't detect any of my speakers. I ran emo-q again, same thing, but this time my center was faint. Didn't detect any speakers. Called tech support and ended up having a firmware that shouldn't have been put on any UMC-1 that was shipped to a customer. It was a beta that they decided not to go with. Version was 7.04.00.10. The tech guy thought that was the reason for not detecting speakers and I brought up my center. He said I need to play a movie or something to see if it was defective now. I did so and it's like it's on mute but not. The speaker smells burnt. I did the firmware change and put 7.04.00.07 on the UMC-1 and ran emo-q again. Same thing, really loud and didn't detect any speakers. Called in and spoke with someone else and they said I got a bad mic and since the mic isn't hearing anything it kept going louder. I asked if I could use my mic from my Denon with Audyssey and he said I could to see if it would pick them up. It picked up all speakers except for my center speaker with the audyssey mic and the volume didn't get 1/4 as loud as it did with the emo mic.
To sum this up, I'm regretting my purchase now because all I get is a new mic shipped to me. I was told they're not responsible for my speaker. I feel they should be. The reason it blew my speaker is because the mic wasn't hearing anything and it kept getting louder, which blew my speaker.
I spent $1268 on the xpa-5 and umc-1. Finally got it in and it blew my speaker because I got a defective mic out of the box. Now I got a nice amp but I dont have a good set of speakers anymore because of the umc-1. I should've kept what I had and I would have a working system.
Hope you all don't get a defective mic like I did! Cause you'll be out of luck with a bad speaker or possibly more.

Sorry to hear your story. I don't recall EmoQ hijacking the volume control and getting progressively louder. I originally had a bad mic, but the UMC-1 never got louder than what I had set it to before I ran EmoQ. Hope it all works out in the end for you...

Wow, that really sucks. I'm not sure that I would accept what Emo told you. You may want to call back and talk to someone a little higher up the chain if possible.
What kind of speakers do you have?

I have to ask when you heard it getting louder why didnt you cut the power or somthing ? I thought it was just emo-q doing it's thing. I wish I would've now.

I emailed Dan but no response. I have Klipsch Icon. Fronts: VF-35 Surround: VF-35 Front: VC-25 I don't think I would wait for a email response. I would give them a call tomorrow and ask to talk to him directly. I also saw your post in the Emporium and I wouldn't settle for a non matching center channel. I would give Klipsch a call and find out how much it would cost to have your center repaired before you call Emo. Then you can give Emo a call knowing what kind of resolution your looking for. Let us know how things go.
