I'm sure it sounds good, but my SLS produce LIVE sound and it's ribbons is also patented and the bookshelf disappears like my 2 channel ess heil 1D MODIFIEDS. I might consider purchasing some for my ALL EMOTIVA gear because that system is not yet complete. Since I love ribbons, I believe these new emotiv's will be perfect for my all emotiva HT room. I have my all sunfire/ carver room too and one HT room that's a mix and match. What about an airmotiv 6 for fronts and 4's for rear? I just might do that, but still waiting on the new ht processor to come out from emotiva, then I can work on the sub, fronts and rears with the emotiv's. Can't wait for all the new stuff to come out. Haven't bought an emotiva gear since the ERC 2 came out, last item I bought. I am using one of my oppo a bdp 93 for the all emotiva gear as soon as the new stuff come in including any new speakers coming from emotiva. Not in a hurry til the new stuff comes in. The airmotiv sounds very appealing just by looking at the website!

Get the 5's and give your wife the 4's :-D i like the size of the 4's and dont really see myself really paying the extra amount just for a 5 and no increased tweeter size....both these sets of airmotivs are just being used as desk speakers for PC's anyway....lol i have too much gear as it is in the "bigger" dept. If i were to bother with bigger id just get the 6's but dont really have a need for them as there is so much gear at both our places as it is.

Well the airmotivs have made it to their now permanent location with the XDA-1 and to my PC. Since I will now have internet again on tuesday; my gaming will kick up again... Monday I will have my Auralex Isolation pads just in time for the first day of returning to gaming. I listened to some tunes last night and really liked what i heard coming even from itunes...lol. The imaging on these speakers is just awesome....FYI....if you use them in this manner.....get them off the desk (atleast directly). after finally having some nice speakers for desktop pc I can now really understand and appreciate why people use some sort of isolation pads...

So, Airmotiv line versus ERM line. I keep going back and forth trying to decide which way to go. Folks keep talking about the sound quality of the tweeter and bass on the Airmotiv line.
Can (or should) they be used for music and ht? Does nearfield mean exactly that and don't bother for medium to large area?
Any thoughts?

The Airmotiv line was/is intended to be a "near field" professional studio monitor. However, many have adopted them for "desktop" home use as well. The new, revamped, Emotiva "Reference" (ERM) line of home monitors is rumored to incorporate the same ribbon tweeter that is used in the current Airmotiv line. If you intend upon using these as a standard home monitor, I would wait for the new ERM lineup to be announced.

personally i just couldnt use these for primary HT sound. not because they arent great speakers but becuase they were designed for exactly what they are "NEAR FIELD" speakers.
placement is way more critical when trying to tune the sweet spot............... that i have found.
now if you have a tiny room and short distance from you to them...go for it.

I have the Airmotiv4's for my computer near field monitors. Before I tested them with the computer I placed them on top of my Emotiva ERM-1's in my HT room. They sound great with super wide dispersion. The sound is very smooth although I prefer the sound of the Emo silk dome tweeter slightly over the folded ribbon. The silk dome surprisingly had a slightly better extended high end. The problem with using the Airmotiv4's as a standards speaker in a 2 channel or multi-channel system is the fact that each speaker has a power cord and the volume output is limited. My Airmotiv4's sounded excellent at low to medium volumes but ran out of gas (power) at about 90dB's, no way loud enough for high volume dynamic music or movies. Sorry folks, but they do make for a great computer speaker straight from the computer built-in sound cards output, no external DAC required for excellent sound. For info on the bracket mentioned at the Emo Pro website check out this thread. emotivalounge.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=off&thread=21846&page=1

Got my aimotiv4s over the weekend.... very nice, very nice indeed. Plugged directly into the XDA sourcing from Sonos, DVD and my mac (running Spotify). Actually made me realize how good the XDA is too... Next up is to integrate all this with my Yamaha A3000 to take advantage of the 4 zones. Beautiful sounding speakers for their size, great complement to the home office. I find them extremely rich and for the music choice I play in the office (Ray LaM, Gonzalez etc) they are perfect. Very happy and definitely worth the investment.
