HI i am awaiting arrival of speakers and XPA-5 and USP-1.
How do i hook things up?
I am guessing all speakers into XPA-5 and then that into preout of AV receiver.
Then my turntable into USP-1.
Then USP-1 into XPA-5?
any suggestion would be appreciated---i am a newbie

Each speaker cable goes into the XPA-5. Each speaker needs a cable that goes to the respective preout on the USP-1 or AVR if you have one. TT to the USP-1. The USP-1 is your preamp.

To add what cgolf said: - TT to USP-1 using RCA interconnects (cables)
- USP-1 to AVR using RCA interconnects (cables)
- AVR to XPA-5 using RCA or XLR (if your AVR has the capability) interconnects (cables)
- XPA-5 to speakers using speaker wire

If i have an AV receiver does the USP-1 make that much of a difference? Should i invest in the USP-1?

My set up variables;
Analogue Stereo = Oppo 93 ---(analogue)---> USP-1 ------> XPA-5 -------> L, R speakers & sub
Vinyl, Denon TurnTable ---(analogue)---> USP-1 ------> XPA-5 -------> L, R & sub
HT = Oppo 93 ---(HDMI)---> UMC-1 -----> USP-I ---(passthrough) ----> XPA-5 ----> L, R, Centre, sub & surrounds.
The USP-1 has a "pass through" option which as it says passes the signal from the UMC-1 to the XPA-5, straight through, no changes to the sound.
Before I upgraded to the UMC-1 XPA-5 combination I used a Denon 3805 AVR. That was set up;
Denon TurnTable ---(analogue)---> USP-1 ------> 3805 (External Input) -------> L, R & sub
As for the USP-1 in general, it is arguably my favourite Emotiva product. If you like stereo then a USP-1 should be on your list.
Cheers Gary

Greatl, thanks. Can you guys explain the "balanced" and "unbalanced" options? Which on should i be plugging things into?

Balanced is the 'better' way, less distortions. You need neutrik cables. Unbalanced you need RCA cables. For short distances there is not really a difference. The XPA-5 does not have balanced inputs.

so i will have to plug all cables into "unbalanced" as XPA-5 does not have "balanced".

Your XPA-5 has both balanced and unbalanced connectors on its back panel. The balanced connector uses an XLR connection the unbalanced has an RCA connection. You will need to check the switch on each channel to make sure you select the proper connection type. The slider switch must match the connection type you use or you will NOT get any sound out of that channel. Please read the User's Manual. You can download a copy from the Product Page if you have not yet received your amp.

Maybe my answer was not clear enough. The XPA-5 has balanced inputs, but they are not truly balanced like the XPA-1. So it looks nice and the balanced connection is firmer, otherwise IMO no advantage. The balanced output will sound different because it has a + 3 Db compared to the RCA connection. You can choose: RCA-RCA XLR-RCA
