I've heard the Rega Apollo extensively in my own home (mostly). While a friend was gallivanting across Australia I took care of his house (mail, plants, stuff like that). He wanted to pay me but I wouldn't take his money.
I did however, ask to audition his Apollo while he was away. I ended up having it for three weeks. In the end, I liked it but my JVC was better IMO. (I did not have the Sony below in my signature then.)
The Apollo was very open and revealing with a beautiful sense of space. The music was engaging (a trait I look for in CD players) and I recall it being very quiet (better than the JVC in that regard) and balanced, for the most part. It was more open that my ERC-1 but not more so than the JVC. Also, I was not a fan of the high end in the Apollo, finding it a bit muddy (again, compared to the JVC). The low end was superb, besting the JVC but not the ERC-1.
All of my listening was done with redbook CDs via analog.
