Mu Denon AVR-5600 has gone up in flames (literally). I have a 5.1 setup. Was orginally thinking about buying a Yamaha RX-A800 and powering the fronts and center with a XPA-3 using the receiver pre-pros. Let the receiver power the surrounds. This option would cost $430(receiver) + 599(xpa-3) = $1033
2md option $499 (USP--1) + $769(XPA-5 = $1268
both options are in my budget. Any suggestions or advice would be helpful...thanks

If there's any possibility of you going to 7.1 ch setup now or in the future, opt for the XPA-5. Even if staying 5.1 it's best to have all channels match, especially if you're listening to multichannel music.

the setup will be used for movies and 2-ch music. BTW- I have Axiom M-80 fronts woth V-150 center. Will the XPA amps power these speakers well ?

Given your usage preferences you'll be fine with either the XPA3 or XPA5. The Axioms I think are 4 ohms, IIRC and rated for at least 300 W, maybe even more. The XPA amps will mate very well with them.

OK..so both the XPA-3 or XPA-5 would work well.
But what about the UMC-1 vs. receiver factor . which is a better value ?
$430(receiver) + 599(xpa-3) = $1033 or $499 (USP--1) + $769(XPA-5 = $1268

I have had powered my speakers by the Denon AVR3311(center+surrounds) and the DEnon PMA1500AE(fronts) and I use now the XPA-5. I sold the PMA1500AE and my setup is now Denon AVR3311 and XPA-5.
The difference with the center channel is enormous, I can put the volume -10 compared to the setup with the Denon 3311 and I still have better and clearer voices. IMO use Emotiva for all channels, it will improve your surrounds(and stereo) greatly.
Stereo is not so good with the Denon AVR3311, I think I'm spoiled because I heard so much better with the PMA. I'm now looking for a stereopre to have the best of both worlds.
Best solution is to buy a different pre for surround and stereo. Almost every stereo pre/receiver will outplay a AV-receiver/pre processor when it comes to stereo.
It is the question which is more important to you: surrounds or stereo.
Good luck making your choise!
