I am new to this site, so look over any ignorance that I may have.
I have been in the audio industry as a hobbiest and was in sales back in the 80's and early 90's. I have never owned any high end equipment other than rotel, adcom, nad, denon. All of my speakers were AR, EPI, Genesis, Advent. I took electronics repair for home entertainment in the80's also....so, by no means...I do not think I know more than anyone else!
I bought the UPA-1's to replace my Adcom gfa-555. I have adcom preamp/tuner combo and adcom cd player. I am using an old pair of Genesis 66 speakers, that I updated....like new. They will handle 350 watts rms. but will drive with as little as 25 watts. The impedance is 8 ohms...they have dome inverted tweeters. And, they also have scan speak dome midrange. The woofers are two 8 inch. this makes for tight bass response. So, the speakers are very neutral. 90 db sensitivity.
The Adcom was a very warm sounding amp right from the opening of the box. Everything sounded very tight on this amp....not very open, but very well detailed. Once you turned the amp close to above moderate level.....around 10 o'clock...the amp did get harsh on the mids and highs.
Now for the review..................
When I first turned the upa-1's on...I was very unhappy with the initial sound of the amp. But, I knew it needed time to break in.
After about 5 days of listening, the two amps began to come alive.
The soundfield of this amp is very wide. The highs and mids are very natural, and the dynamics of this amp is right on. of course, you really need to listen to good recordings to make a good assumption of any piece of equipment. I was listening to dire straits, yanni, little feat, august rush cd and quite a bit of jazz.
I did notice in initial listening that the amp was very bright......but, you absolutley need to let this amp break in.
I actually caught myself smiling as I was listening to steve winwood. Very dynamic cd. The amp did not miss a beat. Bass was tight, mids were well placed and highs were right on.
In my oppinion............this amp in very discolored and neutral. I do believe that is what we audiophiles are after. This amp gives to you exactly what you put into it pure unadultered sound.
I do realize, every speaker is different....and every media source is different, but for my system ....This is very pleasing....
My hats off to Emotiva and the team for building good quality equipment at great prices.....
