I purchased the Airmotiv 6 having absolutely no need for them whatsoever. I have an illness, a desire to continually hear new things, and I'm lucky enough to have a wife that says "you make the money, buy whatever you want". She still looked at me sidelong when the boxes arrived and said "what did you buy now? I hope these aren't more speakers" Crickets.
Anyway, in looking at the specs online, and then reading the initial reviews, I had to hear these for myself. I'd been thinking about getting Golden Ear speakers to hear that new tweeter, but the price on the Airmotiv's just seemed way to incredible to pass up given the included amplifier's and holiday discount.
I'm still breaking them in, and I'm going to say right up front I haven't used any SPL meters or EQ programs, I haven't painstakingly measured distances or moved them around the room inch by inch, and I don't have any room treatments. I just listen. If it sounds good to me, that's all I need. Also, I have yet to push these speakers. I've never put the volume knobs past the "11" position.
After a week of listening to all sorts of different music through the ERC-1 (from "Gladiator" and "The Crow" musical scores to Manowar and Savatage, Tori Amos and Creedance Clearwater), I can't believe how good these little speakers sound. The bass weight is ABSOLUTELY SICK. No speaker this small has any right to have such punch and heft in the low end, and the top end is so crystal clear that I feel like I can listen "into" the music in a way that I can't with my other setups.
I'm using them in the same room (16 x 16 square) as my Mythos ST's that are currently being driven by XPA-1's connected to the USP-1. Doing some A-B comparisons show that, at reasonable listening volumes, the Airmotiv's have a bass response at least as good as, and in some cases better, than the Mythos ST's - speakers that retail for $4,000. And that's with the Mythos amps set at "12", a pretty high setting in a relatively small room.
The only place that the Airmotiv's just can't compete with the Mythos (and in no way would I ever expect them to), is in the midrange. The Mythos is just a much larger speaker and has the capability to flesh out the midrange in much richer detail and to a larger scale. However, details like soft background cymbals or snare brushstrokes are rendered with much greater clarity and across a wider soundstage on the Airomotiv's.
The fact that these speakers sound this good for this price is absolutely incredible. Not only do they compare quite favorably to speakers (and highly regarded ones) costing more than 4 times their price, but they do so while also coming with their own amplification. I feel like I need to look over my shoulder for the cops because I stole something. Speakers of this size that sounded this good would be wonderful without amps. As they are, with their current price, they are an absolute steal.
You can see by my signature I own quite a bit of Emo stuff. It's all good, but I can't say any of it has "blown me away". I buy their equipment because they use high quality parts and have great prices for what you buy. I've been very happy with all my purchases. The Airmotiv's, in my opinon, are on another level. They have blown me away. Great job Emo.
