Hello all, Just received a UMC-1 and XPA-5. Very happy with the XPA-5. The UMC-1 appears to have a problem with the analogue output for the Surround Right. Works very quietly for about 10 sec and then cuts out until the UMC-1 is power-cycled. Done plenty of isolation tests to prove this. I've contacted Emotiva support and will give them the opportunity to respond, but assuming I will have to RMA the thing, does anyone have some tips on how to reduce the shipping cost from Australia? My wife is ready to kill me already

When you continue your discussion with Emotiva, if they give you an RMA to send the unit back ask them if you can send it back using their shipping rate. It may be cheaper. Or, you can plan your next vacation to Nashville, Tennessee with the family. While you're there enjoying the sites and sounds take an hour out of your day and visit the Emotiva headquarters in Franklin and drop it off for them. ;D
They also may just send you either a new board to have put in (by someone who knows what they're doing) or send you an entire new unit.

Thanks stiehl11,
I'm capable of doing board replacements if it doesn't void my warranty. But I wonder how much they have to trust you for that? I did my uni degree in electronics... Kept fixing my old Yamaha AVR over 10 years (the occasional dry joint, dead cap etc) until it wasn't worth my time any more, hence the UMC-1 purchase :-p

I have fixed a few UMC's like this...it involves normally just reseating the ribbon cable from the top to bottom board...the top connection is easy.. the bottom one is a bit harder, but try that first....often its a l/r surround channel low in signal... happened on at least 2 boxes I have fixed with this method
Im actually down in goldcoast till sat eve... but unlikely I can help you as I fly back to SIngapore sat eve

Thanks.
Tech support have responded with a similar suggestion, and I'll try reseating the lower half of the ribbon again tonight, but it didn't help last time. One suggestion is it could also be a muting transistor on the lower board.
Love the sig.

the trick to getting the lower board connections accessible is juggling the upper board out and carefully disconnect the ribbons to the video board and the radio card on the rear. slow and steady. I had one with the top connector the issue and one with the lower...
good luck.

Partially removed top board this morning, reseated lower half of ribbon cable, still no joy. The next support-suggested diag came through: try the 7.1 direct analogue inputs. In my case, the previously dead channel works. Turning mute on and off works as expected. So probably not muting transistors. Presumably it's whatever board the DACs for the surround channels are on - the top one? The way the channel works quietly for 10-30secs after power-on, then 'fizzles out' (sounding very much like when I had a dry joint on a transistor in the low-power signal path in my old amp) makes me suspect it's somewhere in the analogue stage after the DACs - but anyway, board replacement it is. Will post later on how it goes.

Board arrived today, and it works! Hooray! +1 for Emotiva after-sales support of this international customer.

Glad you were able to fix it in there...the support for o/s customers is top notch. I've done quite a few repairs with this type of shipped parts and it s much faster and cheaper than RMA options even with a small labour charge that need to have people give me. Maybe catch up next time I'm down under..
