wondering if the UMC-1 is all i need ?..
my question is does it have basically and XDA-1 built in for DAC ?..
im running my CPU for music and was wondering if i should purchase a XDA-1 to improve digital music quality or would it be redundant ?.

In my OPINION, the UMC-1 sounds better than the XDA-1. YMMV.

well then ,if its not going to be a big improvment it sound from the DAC in the UMC-1 then i will save my money ..:-)

You could always give it a try and if you don't like it, return it within 30 days of purchase. Some don't care for it but others like the XDA-1. I believe that the XDA-1 has a better DAC than the UMC-1 giving digital sources a better analog conversion to be sent to the UMC-1. The point is moot, however, if you're going to be using the UMC-1 to re-convert the signal to digital using the DSP in the UMC-1.

Unfortunately, since the XDA-1 is a clearance item, the 30-day return policy does not apply. All sales are final.

Oh yes, my bad... I forgot that they clearanced them. Without that I would be cautious spending the money unless you were certain you had a use for it. I like mine, but I'm not using it with my UCM-1.

There are plenty of used XDA-1s floating around and the resale market seems to be healthy. You might only be out the shipping cost if you buy one used, try it, and don't like it.
The UMC-1's internal DAC is not all that bad, so don't expect a miracle. As you may already know, better DAC will make poor recordings sound worse. A lot of my 70-80's rock and roll music falls into that category.
