Without too many spoilers, is this a proper prequel to Alien? define proper.. i think so, it shows the beginning stages of the creation of the "Alien" species, which is ironic in itself because which with out giving to much away wasnt the propose of the plot but maybe the purpose of the movie. i really enjoyed it and will be buying it.. i think it could the beginning of prequels, but maybe not... Ok it appears that it "may" show the beginnings of the Alien race. I know now that wasn't the main intent of the movie given its title. (just going by the previews) We all learned about Prometheus from the Illiad. I'm going to check this out in Imax this weekend.

Anything dealing with the Xenomorphs (or their lifecycle) is secondary to the plot... almost an afterthought, really. The equivilant would be watching a film that takes place millions of years ago on Earth and at the end of it seeing a fish walk on land and calling it the prequel to the human race.
It's not exactly like that, but it's close.

Just got home from seeing it the 2nd time in 5 days, both times in IMAX 3D. Even better the 2nd time around. Awesome LFE. Incredible cinematography , amazing 3D. YMMV

It's not exactly like that, but it's close. IMO I don't agree with you. I think it does a nice job of at least explaining how the Xenomorphs came to be. Plus from the original Alien, I always wondered what the giant Alien ship was that sent the distress beacon in the first place. The wrecked ship was exactly the same horseshoe style that was found in Prometheus. The long dead alien corpse they found with its chest burst right before the Xenomorph egg discovery was the same alien as the Engineers in Prometheus. While the plot is certainly different, I still see it as a prequel. Perhaps not a direct pre-quel but it certainly does precede the time of the original movie and does have some connections. Regardless, I really enjoyed the movie and love thinking about all the questions the film leaves behind. The religious undertones were very interesting, in fact, were probably the best part of the movie. Go see it in IMAX 3D for all those who have not seen it yet, the experience was fantastic

Watched it over the weekend and I thought it was great, there is allot of nit picking about some things going on over a few forums, but I enjoyed it immensely. Saw it on 3D IMAX here in NYC, and it was jaw dropping beautiful, I would love to see it again..For those who said it was too slow of pace I thought it went by like blink on an eye. I'm hopping the a sequel Oh one more thing, I believe Scott R said him self this wasn't a prequel per say, it was more story of the creators of Xenomorphs. I'm guessing he said that so folks wont come out of the theaters pissing and wanting a Predators Vs Alien type flick..I'm for one it wasn't one, does make me sick. Djoel

Neil DeGrasse Tyson is an idiot. Check the math, they *would* be approx. 1/2 billion miles from Earth if they had just passed Jupiter. Dinks like Tyson piss me off. He makes stupid statements without checking the facts. I'm betting Prometheus is gonna be revered as one of the greatest sci-fi movies ever. Ridley Scott is a true genius...

And Roger Ebert's website *also* pisses me off. I absolutely *hate* sites that popup Explorer windows in the background just because you visited their site. Stop stealing my bandwidth and processor cycles you a$$holes!

Saw the movie Friday night in IMAX 3D and loved it. People have been way too serious when reviewing this movie, but then again Alien and Blade Runner had mixed reviews when they came out too.

If you have sites that has to be rendered with IE, there is an IE tab plugin that lets you do that also.

After all this chatter I think I will have to see it again in the Imax 3d. I hate spending so much more, but maybe I really lost out on the expereince in the digital 2D. I also like Ebert and found his review to be similar to my feeling, though I must admit I much more preffered the horror elements of the original Alien to that of Prometheus' attemps that felt too CGI.

Neil DeGrasse Tyson is an idiot. -RW- Hey now, relax. As djoel said, everybody is a critic. Maybe he's just having fun just like us. From wikipedia.... Neil deGrasse Tyson ( /ˈniːəl dəˈɡræs ˈtaɪsən/ born October 5, 1958) is an American astrophysicist and science communicator. He is currently the Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium at the Rose Center for Earth and Space and a research associate in the department of astrophysics at the American Museum of Natural History. Since 2006 he has hosted the educational science television show NOVA scienceNOW on PBS and has been a frequent guest on The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, Real Time with Bill Maher, and Jeopardy!. It was announced on August 5, 2011, that Tyson will be hosting a new sequel to Carl Sagan's Cosmos: A Personal Voyage television series.[2] And you should use CHROME.

And you should use CHROME. Chrome works also. (I use it at home) Just no IE. I've been using Firefox since the original Netscape team. Hard to break the habit at work.

It's over 200 trillion miles.

Regardless, I really enjoyed the movie and love thinking about all the questions the film leaves behind. The religious undertones were very interesting, in fact, were probably the best part of the movie. Go see it in IMAX 3D for all those who have not seen it yet, the experience was fantastic I didn't see a Xenomorph in this film. The closest I saw was a "proto-Xenomorph" that didn't have the same lifecycle nor did it look very much like any of the Xenomorphs previously. The distress beacon was a warning beacon (Ash decoded it while the Nostromo was on the surface, if I remember) but we do not see any remains of the Prometheus in the first movie, nor do they visit the same area of the planet. The derelict ship from Alien is the same style but not the same ship (it is a different wrecked ship). The "Space Jockey" was an Engineer but we did not see his death, we did not see what burst from his chest, in fact there were no chest-busters or face-huggers at all in this film. And nothing that resembled them, either. We did not see what laid all those eggs or why that ship (seen in Alien) crashed. I will agree that it does take place before Alien and that it is in the same universe. Maybe, if other films are made that take place after Prometheus but before Alien, we'll see what evolves the creatures that we are introduced to in the film into eggs, face-huggers, chest-busters, finally the Xenomorph proper (that always takes part of its form from the host). Was it natural evolution of their expedited life cycle? Was it inter-breeding? Was it genetic engineering? If so, by who and for what purpose? But, for this film the creatures and the proto-Xenomorph were not plot points important to the film. Therefore, not a direct prequel, IMO.
