How do you match how powerful an amp you need for a particular speaker?

I don't know much about your background but one is more likely to damage your speakers with an underpowered amp than an overpowered amp. I buy the most powerful unit I can afford with the best SNR and THD ratings. Most listening is usually done at a couple of watts to about 10 watts of power. However, dynamics can demand many times that much power for short periods of time in the hundreds of watts range. If your amp is very efficient it means it can be driven louder at lesser amplifications. For instance mine is >91 db for 1 watt and Klipsch can get upto a 100 db or more. What means is that if your amplifier cannot provide a quality signal at low power then your audio quality may suffer with more efficient speakers. I have the UPA-2 on my axioms which are reasonably efficient and the audio quality does not appear to suffer on them.
