War of the worlds is a great workout for your subs, but since your trying out an amp I would suggest the new Tintin movie, the LFE is good but I love the surround mix it's by far one of the best movies I own.

Agreed about War of the Worlds. I just watched it for the first time on the weekend and I have to say that the audio is very good but that has got to be one of THE stupidest movies I've ever seen in my life. The original was soooo much better. The remake was nothing but special effects.

Yeah, but when those tripods blew their horns... Zowwy!! You aren't kidding. This is the one and only thing that has ever made my Denon receiver go into "limp" mode and shut down. This disc is a bass torture test. All the movies mentioned are great. I would like to add one more to the list, but it's more a particular scene. It's in the first of the 3 Lord of the Rings movies, where they are in the mines of Moria. The part where they come upon the head dwarf's burial chamber. It all starts out very quiet, and when the skeleton falls down the well shaft is a cool sound. Then after that, it's a major build up to some awesome surround sound and bass.

Oh, now your opening a can of worms with asking that. I listen to so many styles, people think I'm nuts. Here at work I just went from Alison Krauss - New Favorite to Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica! Just can't stand rap, and most bubblegum country I've bought the Rush Blu-Rays and a couple others. Since you are digging on Allison Krauss, if you can still find a place to download it from, the official 24/96 release of Raising Sand is very nice. Since you mention music blurays, and no one else has brought it up, there is no better disc in terms of absolute sound quality, overall recording mix, and perfect HD video, than the Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds Radio City Music Hall bluray. There may be equals out there, but there are none better. This is a reference disc for sure. Of course it helps if you like the music, but even magazines like Sound & Vision and Home Theater, who did not particularly like the music, still said this is the way all music recordings should be done. Good luck, and have fun.

*All* of the discs authored by Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree) are terrific. This includes all of the PT albums available as well as his efforts for King Crimson. The music is great and the discs sound terrific...
-RW-
PS: These are DVD-Audio discs. Nonetheless, the sound is sublime...As for "limp mode", I have never experienced that with my Butler. Then again, it is a MUCH better amp than what is found in even the best receivers.

I'm also partial to Master and Commander...the cannon fight scene. Truly awesome surround affects. The cannon scenes are a great way to check out the low end extension of your sub(s) and if you have highs speakers too, the "running on deck" above you effects. If all you want is a good Blu-Ray movie with a great soundtrack, you might consider The Dark Knight (Dolby TrueHD 5.1). This is pretty much the top of the heap for showcasing home theater overall. After that, I would consider "Wall-E", " The Matrix", " Lord of the Rings - Fellowship of the Ring", " Casino Royale", " Das Boot", " Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen", " Star Trek" and " U-571". If it's more about concerts, then I would suggest " Eagles - Hell Freezes Over" as one of the best. It kinda depends on what type of Blu-Ray content you like. Pick one you enjoy watching and then do some critical listening too...

Not to thread jack too much:
Has anyone had experience with the Disney WOW disc. I have looked for it locally and the retailers have it as an internet only product. Is it worth the $25 os so bucks?
What all did it do for you?

Just try out the train wreak scene that occurs about 18.5 minutes into the Blu-ray of "Super 8" - WOW!

I finally downloaded the SCUBASTEVE blu-ray demo disc volume 2... put it on a hard drive as I do not have a Blu-ray burner and connected it via USB on the OPPO BDP-93. Sort of a long process considering the 40+GB data to move around but definitely worth the effort.
Very very nice work done both to demo the picture quality and the sound quality with the movie sampling done.
Couple other suggestions: The Fifth Element -Blu-ray (remastered) 2012 - Blu-ray - The multiple scenes featuring the earthquake Diana Krall - DVD live in Paris (track in DTS 5.1) Diana Krall - SACD Audio (Hybrid) - Girl in the Other Room

Not sure what you are questioning about my post? I saw this movie in the "good" theater by our house (all theaters are not equal), and that scene was definitely a "holy sh*tter." I even remember saying to my wife after the show that we will need to get that on Blu-ray just for the sound alone. So far we have not done that so I can't comment on the blu-ray specifically, but I'm sure it's awesome. But regardless, it won't put my receiver into limp mode anymore. That happened with my old Bose 10.2 floorstanders. My new Def Tech's are pretty efficient, and have their own built in subs to ease playing bass. Nothing I've played on them in the past 6 years has made the receiver go limp. And besides, as of a month ago, I'm also using the XPA-2 for the front mains. Now wowflutter, On the opposite side of things, the one movie on blu-ray I just can't recommend for sound is the highly over rated sound of Transformers. Everyone I knew raved about the sound in that movie, but I found it seriously disappointing both in the theater and on blu-ray. I just don't know what everyone raved about because I just found it all ho-hum; nothing exciting about it; very pedestrian by today's standards. This is a movie that should have crazy loud passages and deep deep bass, but it's totally lacking. I had good reference with the blu-ray, because we watched Transformers and Iron Man back to back, and I can say with 100% certainty that Iron Man blew Transformers away. I'm sure I'll get flamed for making these comments, but I'll stand by my sentiments. Note: I can't comment on the sequels as I only saw the first one.

Not saying that the movie is the end all of demo material but i certainly wasnt disappointed with the SQ. Just curious, what subs are you running?? I didnt see any listed in your sig, but maybe i missed it??

Iron Man would kick the Transformers asses. Don't even get me started on The Hulk. My *favorite* movie scene (The Avengers) is when Hulk cold-cocks Thor and then gives a sick grin afterwards. You ROCK, Hulk!!
-RW- Capt. America, giving the directive "Hulk, smash!" is a close second...

Glad to hear you got the XPA-2, that one's on my short list too. I like your posts - good job!

Thats the first time i've heard someone say that. Not saying that the movie is the end all of demo material but i certainly wasnt disappointed with the SQ. Just curious, what subs are you running?? I didnt see any listed in your sig, but maybe i missed it?? I know, I know, even the magazine reviews said it sounded great. Not me. All my own opinions of course.....but... I didn't even think this movie sounded good in the theater. I walked out seriously disappointed. Maybe I should be more precise. Without great sound effects, great dynamics, hard punches, and really impressive low end booms, Transformers wouldn't even be worth watching in the first place. A movie of this sort must have these things or it loses 2/3rd's of it's appeal. This isn't some movie with character development or a great story line. So while the sound itself is not quote quote "bad," as in harshness or hissing or scratching or muffled or whatever causes "bad" sound etc, it just doesn't have the "wow" factor it should; the high octane it should; not even close. It certainly does not rock the house like Iron Man does, or a lot of the other movies mentioned here. My 2 main speakers have built in subs. Each has (1) 10" driver with (2) 10" passive radiators. Each is driven by a 1500 watt class D amp. My center also has it's own low frequency driver with it's own 300 watt class D amp. They may not compete with big huge $5000-$10,000 monster subs, but with 3300 watts built in, they certainly rock the house, and are not the problem with watching Transformers.

Not questioning your post, Maybe it was the question mark? ;D Like I said, I don't think that will happen now, especially with the XPA-2 in the mix. But, thanks to you reminding me, I went to Amazon yesterday and put Super 8 in my cart. That will be a good thing to have. Thanks!

I guess im gonna have to watch Transformers again and see how it goes. We just (re)watched part 3 the other night and it was fun, though still nothing like the Iron Man flicks, IMO of course. I'll see how the first Transformers stacks up in the next day or so. My mains dig pretty deep with some good authority, but they still dont have the SPL or extention that a good subwoofer provides. Especially for these action flicks with lots of LFE. My name is Eric and im a bass-oholic, so take it for what its worth. ;D
