Thanks a lot Mark; that's exactly what I was after. Sounds like Hypex made the jump from powering iPod docs to real, decent amplification in style; I read a lot of "professional" reviews, but usually I take these with a grain of salt until I read a "real-world" review/compare. In your case, to top it all, the compare went against an amp that I know... which means a lot.
Again, thanks a lot for the time.
PS I think I forgot to mention: congrats on the DIY project! The monoblocks look awesome.

The Hypex N-cores definately sound like a pretty good option for DIYers! Glad to hear that you've had such success. I noticed that www.hypex.nl was offline for maintenance yesterday, and still offline today. Weird.

jjmatrix - thanks for the comment on my monoblocks' look. I was going for something unique, and I think I got it!
And yes...hypex had made a nice jump into big time quality sound. and, they are great for DIY-ers. Hopefully, the website is coming back up with announcements of some new products...

Indeed! It won't be as fancy as your CNC-milled extravagansas, but it should look cool and sound great! Mark (PS...how the hell does one spell, "extravagansas"?) extravaganza..... ;D

I have not measured in heavy use, but I just checked them in normal TV volume use. The amp board is about 110-115 F and the hottest part on the power supply is ~135-138 F. The cases are 73 F on the wood face and 77 F on the plate the amp and power supply are mounted to.

Inside the PSU measured 115 and 105 on the amp. This was after a lot of listening. The case is acting like a giant heat sink to pull the heat ;D

Hey Klinemj!
Just found your thread and read through it. Interesting!
Have you tried it with you XSP-1?
Do you use the hypex just for music or do you also use them with the XPA-5 for the rest of the HT?
Do they play well together? I mean the hypex in tandem with the XPA-5 when watching movies

eliwankenobi...first, cool username! To your questions... Yes - I do use my Hypex with my XSP-1. Sound great. Here's my review of it with my Hypex nCores: emotivalounge.proboards.com/thread/26526/klinemjs-xsp-1-reviewI use the Hypex as power for my FR and FL whether it's for 2 channel or multichannel. The XPA-5 in multichannel powers my center and 4 surrounds. I use the XSP's HT Bypass to toggle between 2 channel and multi. The combo of the hypex and the XPA-5 works well for my needs. The gain on the XPA-5 is more than the gain of the Hypex so I originally set levels to account for that (using my UMC-1's EmoQ...which nailed the levels within 0.5 dB per speaker of what the gain differences should be based on specs). Based on the specs, the XPA-5 should be 6 dB higher gain than the nCores. Recently, I put in some attenuators on the XPA-5 and that led to the UMC-1 not having to cut levels to the channels the XPA-5 powers. But, the attenuators I got overshot the goal vs. what they should have done so now the UMC is having to boost those channels...I might swap for different attenuators. But, either way, the multichannel sounds great. I would just rather the UMC didn't have to adjust so much for the gain difference. The XPA-5 Gen 2 would be a better choice as its gain is only 29 dB vs. my XPA-5 Gen 1 at 32 dB. Mark

LOL! bootman...interesting cases, for sure. But, I have less $ in mine than any of those, and I have ideas for custom 5-channel ones made of wood and metal and glass that would be even less (and easier to make than what I did). I'd still prefer custom over pre-made. I think that's the ultimate DIY...esp. considering how easy the electrical part of the DIY is! By the way, I am the son of a woodworker, so that's a hint to my bias...keeping my late Dad's memory alive by exercising the talents he tought me. I'm not as good as he was, but...I try - and I'm "better than the average bear". FYI, I assembled my amps on a table I helped him build over 40 years ago. It was our family dining room table, but now it's in my office as an extra work surface for working at home, paying bills, or the odd job like building the amps. Mark Just read this inspiring thought......wonderful!

They really are an easy DIY project. And if you don't have the skills to build a case, you can get one predrilled for 70 or so.

I like Star Wars, Ben Kenobi is my favorite character... they went well together! Thanks! for the replay.. Maybe thinking in the future start with an XPA-3 and then build me some NC400s for my front L/Rs. I love how small people are able to get these things! They should go very well in my room! Thanks again

Glad to help. If you start into a build, feel free to contact me and/or greenkiwi. We both have experiences w/them. They are indeed easy, and it's fun to tell people that "I built my own amps". Sounds impressive.

Mark, I visited your thread from a post you posted just recently. The red light from the Hypex amps really add some personality to your setup. I can just imagine what kind of sound you are getting. I'm currently running a humble UPA-2 and a not quite so humble DC-1 and it sounds amazing playing some wynton marsalis. I can only imagine what yours is like.

The red lights on the Hypex do add a nice touch. I specifically built the smoked glass windows into my cases after seeing a picture of the red lights on the amps in someone else's build pix on AudioCircle. I had been thinking of wiring in a "power on" light, then I saw the amps had the red line of lights. So...the idea of the window came to me. If they only traced back and forth like the Cylon eye from Battlestar. My wife is a big sci-fi fan, and that would have doubled the WAF!

Mark I was wondering if you had ever compared your hypex sonically to any of the other diy class d amps. I was thinking mostly the abletec/anaview alc 1000-1300 or the newer ams 1000-2600 modules? I also am intrigued by the aluminati x2 using a pascal module but I think the pascals are oem only so cant really build it my self. Or any other modules that are diy that I havn't mentioned? I am trying to figure out first I want to build my own class d amp (of course I want to, who am I kidding) and second which modules to get.

I didn't. I ended up trying the nCores on a whim based on a reco from rclark (banned here now) figuring if I liked them better than my XPA-2 I would keep them. And I really did. So, I didn't shop around at all. That is unusual for me, but once I am happy, I tend to stay put. So, I have not shopped around since my decision.

I love mine...so yes. Great finesse w/o any signs of stress, and they can pump it out even with my Maggie's. I would buy them again.
