I got a good deal on a Panasonic Plasma after fighting with two salesmen at Sears. All last week starting last Sunday, I followed a Panasonic Plasma TCP-55ST30, a 2011, model. It was a demo model, on the floor for one year and they had it for $799.00, because the 2012 model was sitting right across from it for 1399.00 on sale.
I talked to the salesman to see if they were going to reduce it further and left my phone number if they would. 30 minutes later I received a phone call from the salesman that they would reduce the price to $622.00 if I bought the 3 year warranty for $349.00 or the 5 year for $549.00.
The salesman stated the manager would allow me to put the warranty on lay away if, with the first installment due upon pickup for $71.00 and the rest of the warranty payment due in 8-weeks, bringing the price of the set $693.00 at pickup. I told him I would pay the $622.00 now, but he insisted the price wouldn't be reduced unless I bought the warranty.
On Friday, I went to look to see what else they might have had in a television because I had seen another one and believe it or not have gotten four great deals on television demos at Sears. They had reduced the price of the Panasonic that I had been following at $799.00 to $622.00 without warranty and I talked to one of the first of two salesman and I immediately bought the television.
The salesman said the warranty through Panasonic is gone and you can only get our warranty. The salesman said the television has been on for one year constantly. I called Panasonic while still in the store regarding getting a warranty through them and they said that because it was sears demo, it was possibly a return and sears has used up their warranty, but wanted to sale their own.
The guy asked me if I was sure twice and said I had 14 days to decide on the warranty, but it would go up to $400.00 for 3 years and I had 30 warranty or return on the television. The guy then asked me if I was sure I didn't need HDMI cables twice. I bought 10 HDMI cables from Amazon two months ago for 30.00, shipping included. The saleman looked sick when I bought nothing but the television, he was actually mad!!!
The guy from Panasonic said that their warranty wouldn't have been nearly as high, $169.00 for a 3 year if they could do it. I found out that Best Buy and American TV, Sam's Club's and Walmart's warranties would have been about 100-185.00 for a 4 year warranty. Sears has one of the highest warranty price in the business with $349.00 for three years and $549.00 for five years for Plasmas regardless of their price.
I bought a Panasonic Plasma TH50PZ80U, in 2009, without the warranty for 999.00 and it is still running fine. Do you think I'm taking a serious risk here? Could I have bought the warranty, yes, but over half of the price for the television. I remember going to Walmart and they had demo televisions that they said had no manufacturer's warranty on.
I have properly calibrated the television and it looks great, the 50" has been moved to the living room. I didn't know about the warranty game and last years demo model, because with that being the case my TH50PZ80U was a 2008 model that I bought in 2009 and is now 3 years old.
