The Avengers - 3 of 5 stars -

OK, it was a popcorn movie and never aspired to be anything more. On that basis it was a success, but on every other level the movie’s quality was conspicuous only in its absence.

Even Joss Wheadon’s smart-alec dialogue couldn’t save the movie. Although the special effects of the alien fish ships were spectacular, don’t expect any mental stimulation from this movie.

I Agree, the movie doesn't break new ground, but I don't think it diminishes it for not having a new spin on our violent nature. A review I read comparing the Dar Knight Rises to Avenger's summed it up for me. I'm paraphrasing The Dark Knight Rises is a movie ashamed of being a comic while the Avenger's embraced it.

I thought it was a great start. Like Eq said embraces the comic bok side which is nice these days...
