My current Apogee Centaurs are 22 years old and the once replace ribbons need to be replaced again. I absolutely love these speakers and felt they blew away similar priced Maggie speakers of their era; particularly in staging. Other than the ribbons (only one bad now but will replace both) the speaker are in great shape. Has twenty years of technology made a difference and go with the Maggie 1.7s or do I stick with the Apogees Centaurs? If not I would love to hear if anyone has heard both the Centaurs and Maggie 1.7. I suspect the frequency transition will be smoother on the Maggies but if the staging is worse I will stick with the Centaurs.
Cost: Maggie 1.7 Speakers: ~$1900 New Centaurs ribbons: ~$830
Listening Experience: I did listen to the Maggie 1.7s at a show room at The House of Stereo in Jacksonville FL, about 2 hours from my house. The owner treated me superbly and allowed me lots of time to listen to the speakers without trying to influence me. He did advise me the speaker were brand new and had not been broken in. Great store but let me get back to the speaker issue. Listening to the 1.7s was nice but the staging and dynamics seemed slightly smaller in comparison to my Apogeeās but they were not broken in and his show room is much smaller than my room; 15x18 verses 18x27. Love to hear if anyone has had the opportunity to compare these two speaks?

If you like your Apogee Centaurs, then reribbon and enjoy. Once they are reribboned, I say if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
