I bought this unit 2 months ago and the other day I was ready to watch a movie, turn on the unit and then I heard a loud bang with fire cracker like sound. Then the smell of burned ICs and a little bit of smoke showed up. Unplugged everything (XPA-5 and UMC1) and plug it back after 30 seconds. Then a fault on channel 5 with a falshing LED on the XPA-5. I wonder what happened. I called Emotiva and have been given an RMA #, shipped it to them, and we'll see what fried. I hope this will not happen again because shipping this item for warranty is a pain (cost and weight).

Well, I tried getting a shipping label but they said they can only ship it to me for free and I have to absorbed the cost of shipping it to them. If this AMP blows up again after they have fix it then I will sell it including the UMC1 and move on to a different brand. I've got four friends looking to upgrade their audio/home theater gear and waiting how this will turn out. They love the sound quaity of it but if reliability is not there then they will look in to something else.

Failures are very rare on Emo equipment. While I understand your frustration being one of the very few failures, don't get too down. Overall, the equipment sounds great and is typically very reliable.

Emotiva doesn't redefine the QA but they are not worst then competitors and they have IMO one of the best after market service's. Where Emotiva is excellent, is the quality versus price ratio, if you're willing to pay much more, it's up to you. The final choice is yours.

Hate hearing these equipment failures especially on the XPA-5 since I just bought one about a month ago. Hope it gets fixed and it was just something strange and simple and not common to these amps.

I have received my repaired XPA-5 and according to the worksheet they replaced the module. No more power fault when powering the system up. But now my UMC-1 has no sound. I think it damaged my UMC-1 after to what happened to my amp. It has all the video and it can sense that the signal is dolby digital but no sound. I think it damaged the sound board after the lound bang from my amp. I am calling Emotiva again. This really sucks!!!!

That REALLY sucks; I had no less than 3 pieces of equipment all Emotiva that got fried during a lightning storm and I suffered until I got them fixed. Emo provided excellent service, though it wasn't the equipment's fault; it's a very good feeling to know that no matter what happened, the company will do everything in their power to get you back up and running.

Wow, good luck getting everything up and running well again! (A loud bang, and puffs of smoke are never good things with audio/video equipment! ). Please re-post (again) and let us all know the 'whats and whys' involved - thanks!

Got everything back from EMO and everything seems to work fine for the last few weeks. I have been toying around this UMC1 and XPA-5 with the B&W P5 and Energy Veritas 6.2 and it really sound good. So far so good as it has been running long times everyday. Thanks EMO.

I used to write service tickets when this happened saying "PUT THE SMOKE BACK IN!". The techs were none too happy with my "humor". Heh.

I've had my XPA-5 for four years without a hitch. Well, I had a fuse blow about two years ago but even a dufenshmirtz like me could fix it once I had the correct fuse. But as far as weird stuff going on like the OP, nothing of the sort. I just get used to it working perfectly all the time. Sounds like the OP resolved his issue, though. Good news. Hate hearing these equipment failures especially on the XPA-5 since I just bought one about a month ago. Hope it gets fixed and it was just something strange and simple and not common to these amps.
