Found a pair local and wondered about picking them up. I have been planning on the new Magnepan MMG's, but these cropped up and I thought I would ping the crowd here.

They were great in the day. The better ones had the "medallion" transformers. Like the Maggies, the Acoustats liked LOTS of power. Unlike the Maggies, the speakers are reputed to get wonky after a few years with arcs and damage to the diaphragms (particularly if driven hard). Listen carefully before you buy, and at varying volumes. If they sound fine with no breakup at louder volumes, then go for it. They won't have the dynamics that Maggies do (there is a "loudness ceiling" that they just won't go beyond), but they're probably "faster" sounding than the older Maggies.
All this is pulled from the foggy memories of the 1970's, so consider my advice worth every penny you've paid for it :-)

I think boomzilla's costly analysis is pretty good, they were a great speaker in their day, but that day was some time ago. You might check to see if anyone can work on them unless your willing to throw the dice should they fail.

My recollection is pretty much the same as Boom's. I would not take the chance as nearly everyone I knew who owned them experienced rapid deterioration and became quite expensive to restore sound quality once they started going down hill. What a shame...

Thank you all. I think I will tread lightly here given that a few hundred more I can have brand new MMG's.
