Can any of you car guys recommend a decent remote start? Looking to get one as a gift and the only experience I have with them is with the factory installed one on my truck. Not looking for anything fancy or sophisticated. It would be nice if it could replace the keyless entry fab, but not necessary.

I have many friends that install starters and they all like either Viper or Autostart. You'd just have to look into what options you want to get. Getting them installed is by far the most expensive part.
I have a viper on my truck and an autostart on my car. Both work at almost a mile away and through most any buildings I'm in. Just make sure you get a 2 way remote. It will let you know if the car has started etc. those big fancy remotes are nice but destroy batteries. A simple 4 button, 2 way remote will last years with 1 battery.

Viper also has a smart start option that allows you to do all the remote commands from a smartphone(unlimited range,as long as you have phone signal) I've unlocked my doors in IL while I was in AZ. Lil more money but they have a certain starter that comes with no remotes just for this application. Just an option. At least for sure get a two way like N8dogg said. And not the big screen ones. They go through batteries like crazy and are super fragile. Viper makes a few with LEDs on the side that light up and it plays a lil tune when the car gets the signal and starts. Try and stick with a reputable shop. Some place that's been around for a while. And don't freak out when you see an advertised price of $199 installed and it ends up being more. Most places that's for basic installs that require no extra parts. Integration modules usually run about $100 more. My buddy has owned a custom car audio shop for almost 20 years so that why I know a lil about it.

Many manufacturers are now offering accessory remote starts. The good thing about getting one from the manufacturer is that if any thing goes wrong in the wiring and or starting circuit later, there will be no finger pointing as to who is responsible. Especially if the vehicle still has some factory warranty left. I have seen it happen.

Ive had the viper for 3 years auto start. Alarm . It works great is all I can say. It says a mile range but never was that far away to try. The battery gets charged by a mini usb every few weeks

The module part depends if you have a computer chip in the key. You will also need another key for it to work. I got a key made it cost two bucks I didnt need anything else the wife ride has a chip in the key and needed to go to dealer to make another one with the chip in it. It cost 75 bucks for that. Sorry would of mentioned it earlier but totally forgot.

I know if I take it somewhere to make a copy they can tell me, but it isn't my car and that would ruin the surprise if I took it. Have no clue where the spare is hiding at either.

What kind of car? Some cars don't require a module. Mine didn't. They actually didn't even make one for it at the time. Some require both keys just for programming(Fords) and some require you to actually put a key in a box that is wired into the ignition and mounted behind the dash(VW)
