People were wondering about the difference between these 2 amps in one of the threads, but I did not see any clear answer. What is the difference? Is the UPA-2 a better amp, with the 200 a way for Emotiva to cut their costs a bit? Curious minds would like to know.

Which one is better? Only a side by side comparison could answer that and it is a subjective answer based on the user's listening session. On paper they look pretty much equivalent to each other, with the UPA-200 rated to a wider bandwidth and slightly higher power output. I own a UPA-2 and while I've never compared it with the newer series, there is no reason to believe Emotiva would release an inferior product on purpose. I can say the UPA-2 is an outstanding amplifier.

Yes. I have had the fans activate in my UPA-500 twice so far. Were you pushing it pretty hard when the fans came on? Or is there limited ventilation? Sorry - I don't mean to get OT. I'd be surprised if there was an audible difference between the two.

I'd be surprised if there was an audible difference between the two. I wasn't playing music at an 'unreasonable' level but it was louder than I normally listen each time the fan engaged (I don't know the SPL as I didn't have the meter out, but the volume setting was 60.0 on the UMC-1 vs. my normal 45.0 setting). Ventilation is not a problem. The UPA-500 has 5 inches of space above it and is placed on a perforated shelf.

Soliloquy - thanks for your info. Answers my longstanding curiosity about the fans.

I have the UPA-2. It is the rebadged XPA-200 with slightly less power, less capacitance and no xlr inputs. It also has two amplifier modules vs one in the upa-200 and no fan.

So since the volume was higher than normal I take it you didn't notice the fans until the music stopped or during a silent passage. Was the fan noise very obvious at that point?

Yes, I noticed the fans were on during a "quieter" but still moderately loud segment of the listening session (I paused the music briefly to confirm the source of the strange new noise I heard beneath the music was indeed produced by the cooling fans in the amplifier). The fans were clearly audible at my listening position which is 12 feet away from the amplifier.
