I'm going through the same crap with FedEx right now waiting on my new projector. Never even came to my house yesterday and it shows no one home or business closed online. Called and bitched and its still not here today.

Wow that is bad,... My experience is usually the doorbell rings, I go to the door and find a brown paper bag with 'something' in it on fire on my stoop, so I rush out and stomp it out but end up getting crap all over my shoes! Oh,...no wait,...that was a different delivery company,...

Only the ground drivers.
Similar experience with FedEx here, saying my packages were undeliverable and never attempting to deliver or leave a door tag notice. When I called to complain, I was told by an extremely rude lady that I shouldn't expect any sort of notice, that they aren't required to leave a notice or provide any proof that they attempted a delivery. When I finally got them to hold a package after 3 "attempts" of them never even driving by (or leaving notice) they split my packages up and sent them to several different FedEx stores so that I had to drive halfway around the city to collect them all.
Meanwhile all 3 of my UPS drivers show up every time, are always friendly and are always accommodating. They have no problems taking unscheduled packages from me to deliver and each have asked when the best delivery times are. If I'm not available they have no problem going around the house and putting packages inside the garage. Amazon Prime has me spoiled, so I occasionally get several deliveries a week from UPS.
Back home in Oklahoma, my UPS guy would just leave the packages inside my backdoor in the mud room. If a package absolutely required a signature he would call my cell phone (he had it stored in his phone) to check if I was home or if I wanted to meet him somewhere in town.
Needless to say, I refuse to use FedEx unless it's absolutely necessary.

I would never request FedEx if I had a choice between them and UPS. Most packages that I get from FedEx have been treated poorly during shipping - while I never have issues with UPS. I also know my UPS driver - same friendly guy everytime - while it's never the same FedEx driver.

As someone else said, I think it depends on the driver. I have (knock on wood) had good luck with packages delivered by both FedEx and UPS. Normally I have the more expensive items delivered to my office, which has the same driver all the time and the packages are in good condition. All my Emo gear that comes via FedEx is fine - the boxes don't have dents or holes or anything.
I've also found that the people who have delivered things via FedEx Home to my house are very friendly and the items are in good condition.
That said, it depends not only on the driver but how the stuff gets treated from the origin to the destination, too. Some bad apples can be with either company.

Actually FedEx did a GREAT job delivering my large heavy JBL ES100 floorstanding speakers - all the way from Birmingham England! Did it within 7 days form my order too! (JBL told me they didn't sell these in the U.S. because "the U.S. market doesn't buy large speakers..."). Anyway, from England to MN in a week, and they arrived in PERFECT condition. I was indeed amazed. This may be an anomaly, but they do usually come through...and oh yeah, Fed Ex also delivered my new (large and VERY heavy) Emo XPR-5 in excellent condition - and within 4 days from placing my order, (TN to MN). Not bad.

I make an effort to know my delivery guys. They know my work schedule and will take it to work for me or give me a call.

I have never had issues with Fedex. In fact I have one a block away I can do hold at location. But before I knew about that I would leave a note with cell phone and the drivers would call me and meet me out somewhere. ;D

FedEx ground can't find my house. Half of he things that get sent to me end up on the other street in my 2 street neighborhood. They get the right number 10, but wrong house. My neighborhood is an L, they stop on the I not the _. I had my outlaw 970 repaired and they only ship FedEx. I begged them to send it ups and they couldn't. I explained how they never get all the way to my house, how they just don't come down to the turn and turn down my street. They put my comments in the shipping notes and the driver found our house for a change and was all insulted when he talked to my wife.
Tough luck pal , my house has been here since 1989, ups can find it

I try to get mine redirected to a local FedEx store so I can pick it up at my convenience, especially if it's a signature required item. They get to my house about 30 minutes before I normally get home so that works best for me.
When they delivered my eD subwoofer, they only brought it up the front walk part of the way then came to ring the bell. I got to bring it in the rest of the way. The wuss!!!

I watched one UPS driver take a 92 pound (105lb with box) Infinity Model 15 sub off the back of the truck by letting it drop the 2-3' foot out the back door onto pavement. I took a picture of it with him beside it to document the damage. He wasn't too happy with me but I wasn't going to take the 'fall' for the damaged sub. In all fairness to him it may have been damaged before he ever got it on the truck. I also let him know it wasn't the way to handle a heavy package.
I ended up taking the shipment since I bought it direct from Harman Kardon and their customer service is great. They sent another one out and emailed me a shipping label for the damaged one. I had the damaged one picked up the same day the replacement was dropped off. All I had to do was leave it on the porch for pickup. The sub hit so hard on the end that it pulled out 2 of the drivers from most of their mounting holes. The drivers are very heavy 6" square ones. I've handled 12" sub drivers that weren't as heavy as those - and it uses four of them. It pulled the inserts out of the 1" MDF.
Infinity was at least partially at fault since the sub had only 2" or so of styrofoam protecting the ends of the sub and its pointed at each end.
