unsure which to buy. running Paradigm Studio 100s v5 as fronts and Studio CC - 590 as center. have a pair of Paradigm 9seMK3 as my sides and Wharfedale Diamond 9.1 as rears. my amp is a Marantz SR6004. would the XPA-3 be fine or should i go XPA-5 and power the sides as well. cheers.

Get the XPA-5, the extra $170 for the two additional channels is a good buy, IMHO. And, think real hard bout replacing those Wharfedales with anothe set of Paradigm spkrs, the voicing will be a better match and your soundfield will improve noticeably...

The XPA-5 will bring new life to your whole room. I went through the same decision and am very glad I went with the 5. ;D

Get the XPA-5 while it's on sale. You will also have the option in the future to either use a receiver or an av preamp. You will glad you did.

XPA-5 it is than. when listening to music will only 2 channels power up or will all 5 be always on. not sure about replacing the wharfedale rears. not many 7.1 bluray movies in australia and the ones that i have watched very little sound was sent through them.

All (five) channels will be on, but the ones driving speakers will be using most of the power (i.e., idle channels shouldn't use much power at all.)
If you only drive two channels, they'll be able to provide more power than rated for 5. As has been discussed before, this shouldn't harm the amp channels unless you continuously overdrive them.
Search the forums for more info...

I've got 9.1 and am soon upgrading to 11.1. ;D

Congrats... You will love it. Before getting UPA-1's(monoblock version of the XPA-3/5), I was using a Pioneer Elite receiver, and the amps made a HUGE improvement in dynamics and bass.
Wow, we are both running Paradigm fronts and Wharfedale Diamond 9.x surrounds, although I have them as sides in a 5.1 setup. I have Paradigm Signatures up front and Wharfedale Diamond 9.6's as surrounds, and what rlw said a few posts up is true. I loved the Wharfedales for music before I got my Paradigms, but the two brands have completely different sound signatures(I would even go as far as to say that they are polar opposites) that IMHO shouldn't be used together, even if its just for surrounds. I find the difference in voicing to be very distracting that I sometimes just turn off the UPA-2 that drives them. I've been looking to replace them with S2 v.1's but cannot find them in Maple to match my fronts.

I just purchased this from Emotiva last night. I figured with the sale price and free shipping it would be worth it. Also picked up their CMX-6 power strip to plug this into. I figure it would be better than using my monster strip I own. Any suggestions on use with my equipment? I am not upgrading for many years at this point based on budget and my wife lol. Here is what I have. Mitsubishi Diamond 57" rear projection Yamaha Rx-V861 receiver Emotiva XPA-5 (not arrived yet) PS3 for games and Blu ray play back B&W 703 tower (front) B&W HTM 62 center channel (only until I get a new setup for my TV) B&W 685 bookshelf (rear) B&W HTM 7 center channel (will be used eventually with new TV setup) Any suggestions from you all would be very beneficial. Any thoughts to make my setup better, or used more efficiently IE: not using the HDMI from my receiver. If that is a better way to go I am all ears. Otherwise, this is my gear and I am proud of it, even though my boys touched the tweeter on three of my speakers when they were younger. Otherwise, everything is wonderful and works great. I am just really excited to get the amp and make a flexy rack to start changing up my HT and give me more options. One question, would these cables be fine to use for connecting the Emotiva to my receiver? www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10236&cs_id=1023603&p_id=2681&seq=1&format=2Brian

That is until one of them nearly blew my speaker. When I plugged the cable from my AVR, at the time a Pioneer Elite, to my UPA-1, there was a very very loud hum from the speaker as soon a the asp was turned on. It was probably about 150hz and 100+ dB. It also burned out the preout board on my receiver, which I had to get repaired. Switched all of my analog cables to BLue Jeans since then. But I still use Monoprice for digital, HDMI Cat5 etc. Sent from my DROID RAZR using proboards

On the left, click on "surround audio". I use the LC-1, since they seem to recommend that one. If you need different lengths for whatever reason, click on "stereo audio" or "subwoofer cables" on the side menu. The LC-1 cables are all the same.

Thanks for the info. I went with monoprice for now just because of cost and many people have said they work well. I try not to spend too much on cables if I don't have to and this saves me $40 for the time being. Hopefully that isn't a bad choice based on your experience danny01. Edit: Quick question, is it better to use rca to rca or would these xlr to rca be better? I have zero experience with HT amps, only car audio so this is new to me. www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10244&cs_id=1024404&p_id=4776&seq=1&format=1#largeimage
