My Onkyo TX-SR805 served me well. Main reason for upgrading, was simple. As one builds and upgrades their system, the weakest component is highlighted. ;-) In reality, I really wanted something that allowed me for more HDMI sources, and I'm finally getting XT32 capability. I haven't decided if I still need my Velodyne SMS-1. It may go up for sale. Thoughts? Anyways, got a steal on it from Magnolia Hi-Fi (the local store) because it was on closeout due to the new 4500. This will be used as a pre-amp with XPA-5 on the main stage. Still, I'm psyched, and here's to hoping I'm Wow'd with the upgrade. I've never been a Denon owner, so I'm a little aphrensive, and hoping the learning curve doesn't take me longer than a day or two as I am hosting a movie night on Friday! Will try and get a picture once it makes its way into my rack.

The only down side maybe how quickly do you master the learning curve.
Give it all you've got and enjoy ;D

Did you do better than that? Congrats. Nice AVR with dedicated prepro capabilities.

A4L has referbs for $1200. If you got it new for that price, very nice. You can use the SMS to see what x32 actually does before you sell it. (post pics of the graphs!) Good luck with it. This is one of Denon's best.

I own one and it's a pretty capable receiver, heck it's darn close to the newer 4520 feature wise. So you got yourself a winner.
Good luck

There is a thread on AVS with side by side comparison between 4500 and 4311CI. $1500 difference not worth it. (for me).

I've been wondering about Denon lately myself. I've been using an Onkyo 876 as a pre-pro and would like to upgrade there maybe a year down the road. I don't know why, I'm not unhappy with Onkyo, it just seems that Denon's are a little more refined, at least at the higher end. If I go AVR, it would probably be Denon, but if I go processor, Integra or Emo if the XMC is all that.
To the OP, let us know your impressions!

They make a decent product, but refinement/OSD is not their strongest point. ;-) Yea, I spent a lot of time debating over the same topics you are raising. I could have went the processor route. I would have then lost my rear surrounds, and that would have forced me to pick up another 2ch amp. Wasn't really willing to spend that much cash, (nor do I have rack space). Think this will serve me just fine as a pre-pro and take care of the back channels. the Emo was very tempting, but decided against for a few reasons. XT32 capability on dedicated pros is insane. The response I get from the reps is always, "but dude, it has fully balanced inputs, sound way more refined". Yeah, whatever. ;D

I used an Onkyo TX-SR805 for the past 5 years and its fair to say that the OSD was not very advanced, to be polite.
I have an TX-NR818 now and the OSD is light years better than the 805 in terms of appearance.
Never had a Denon unit so I can't compare the two brands.

I'm pretty much in the same boat as you but I should be ready to upgrade a bit sooner closer to April. I'm thinking I should be able to get this or at least try the XMC by then.

I got mine a few months ago for $1299 I think, and I still love everything about it. Here is a very helpful link for setting it up: batpigworld.com/wp/Also, I recommend connecting it up via ethernet and editing the settings on a computer or smartphone app such as AVR remote. It is much easier than messing with the Denon GUI to adjust the settings. The Denon 4311 has solved a lot of issues I had in the past with the Marantz SR8001 and UMC-1: - HDMI lock on - XT32 works amazing - Bass / subwoofer integration is superior than either of my previous receivers - Nice interface - Fast input changes - Front HDMI / audio input ports

I just wish the X32 calibration wasn't such rip-off. Everything else about the 4311ci is stellar.

eiger-
I hope you'll let us know your experience once you're all settled in with your Denon. I posted a couple days ago asking advice on an Emo amp to go with my Vienna Acoustics Mozart Grands and was told that the XPA-3 or 5 would serve me best (which is what you have, but I'm not driving the rears that you are).
I have the Denon 3311 (also, nearly stole it for just $350 from Magnolia about 2 years ago). I know that my speakers are begging for more love and Emotiva is likely to be the source of that love.
Speaking of love, I'd love to hear how it all works for you.
Thanks.
