Hello everyone, I'm new to emotiva and separate amps in general and was wondering about using my amp with my onkyo 818. I'm using it to power my front height speakers and according to the manual the amp should sense the AVR input signal when set to auto. My experience is that it takes several seconds to come on and sometimes won't stay on. I've used it in auto mode with my PC sound card>amp>speakers and it works fine. Any ideas why it might be intermittent with the Onkyo?

Easy fix to this is to purchase or find a 12V trigger cable. Plug one end into the output of the 818 and the other into the a-100. This will ensure that when you turn the 818 on, the amp comes on as well.

Hi, When I got my mini-X, I experimented with the input auto-on feature, but preferred the trigger system. The amp requires a certain input voltage (volume level) before kicking on. In addition, there is a short delay time (too short in my opinion) before the amplifier turns off. This delay time will begin if the signal drops below the required input voltage (volume too low) or if the signal is cut completely (e.g. music is paused). I definitely recommend you look into the optional trigger system. If your AVR has a trigger output, connect it to the mini-X trigger input. The amp will turn on and off with the AVR. Plus, if you pause your music or listen at very low volumes, you won't have to worry about the amp shutting off and turning on repeatedly. If your AVR does not have a trigger output, you could get one of these devices.

One of the idiosyncrasies of the TX-NR818 is that its 2 output triggers only work with Zone 2 and Zone 3, not main power. I own the 818 and have an XPA-5 connected to it.
Zone 2 and Zone 3 are powered on by a single button on the remote and that was an issue for me, too - couldn't readily tell which one was on and which was off.
The workaround I use is it to connect the trigger cable to zone 3.
I then taught (learning remote) a button on my Harmony One to trigger zone 3 on and off.
I then also taught the Onkyo remote (from the Harmony One) the zone 3 power command on another button (CLR on the lower right hand side since I never used that CLR button). That button now only turns on or turns off zone 3.
So, I power up the 818 and then use either remote to power on the XPA-5. Same thing when I turn it off - power down the 818 and then the XPA-5.
Same set up should work with the a-100.
The 818 is the issue, not the a-100. I use the a-100 in a headphone set up and it triggers on just fine.
Its not elegant but it works - one of the things about the 818 I'm not crazy about.

Thanks everyone for the help. The voltage or lack thereof make sense. I'll try the trigger output and see how it works
