We have a M&K V-75 from 1995 which does a pretty good job with our 1.7's.
Just for kicks, I placed a Klipsch RW-8 at the opposite corner of the front wall to see how the bass response in the room was affected. There was enough of an improvement to make me want to either add a new sub to the M&K, or replace the M&K with a matched pair. The trick is that I need to keep to a budget of $1200.
We enjoy movies and music with a Yamaha RX-A820, and Emotiva XPA-2/XPA-3. Magnepan 1.7, Klipsch RC-35 Center, and SS-.5 surrounds augmented with the Klipsch RW-8 (until yesterday). I have GIK Tri-Traps at the front wall corners, floor to ceiling, and various other panels around the room.
I would sure appreciate any suggestions. I was considering old M&K's used, but there is alot of newer technology out there. I just cannot bring myself to pay the current Kreisel prices. I have been looking at the Emotiva Xref-12's, but I'm not sure I like all the built in electronics. I don't have the gear to do a room analysis, so I'm not sure I would even take advantage of the PEQ...

How big is your room, and how loud do you listen?
The Emo subs seem to be well liked, especially for music.
I'd also look at the HSU Research offerings. It would be a little over 1,200 for two subs, but they provide excellent performance for the money.
Also look into Outlaw Audio. I've used their subs for about five years now, and they are very good for the money. They are actually based on the HSU subs (VTF-2 and VTF-3) and use most of the same parts.
You could get one big sub, but I think you'd be better off with two good subs and the more even response throughout the room.

The room is about 15w x 20dp, and alot open to the rest of the house on one side. Average music listening anywhere from 60-80dB, and we like action movies. I could keep the M&K and add a new one to it. Perhaps a vented, or dual driver?
Have you heard much about Power Sound Audio?

I have a little bit bigger room than you, and my Outlaw LFM-1 Plus performs very nicely. You could just add another sub and keep using the M&K, but I would recommend using two identical subs. Powersound is a new company that was founded by one of the guys who started SVS, and they are supposed to be very good. I've been considering the XV30, which looks to be one hell of a performer. They also have the sealed XS30 that would probably be very good for both movies and music. Plus, they have Emotiva like customer service and they're made in America.

Maybe Matt (kraemer designs) will respond. He has a Powersound and he loves it. In fact, he's going to buy a second one here soon.
I think if you could increase your budget a little and buy two Powersound XS15's, you would be very happy.

I am seriously considering that. My only concern is if they are as fine for music as they are for bass heavy movies.

Matt loves the XS15 in his two channel system. Oops, I misread your last post. I thought you were referring to the ported model. My room is not enclosed, and basically opens up to the rest of the house (2000 sf ranch, 8 foot ceilings. The sealed M&K has a real nice sound, but any punch just gets lost. Add the ported Klipsch, and the overall quality goes down, but it adds some punch. So I am considering the ported model...

Well, you could go with one XV30. Ported with dual 15" drivers. I'm sure it would provide all the output and punch that you need. But I'm sure the sealed model would too. They say that the sealed XS30 has a wicked mid-bass punch to it. It's a tough decision.

I would email or call them. They love to talk to people and give great advice, and they won't try to upsell you at all.

I've just sent an email with photos of the room. That XS30 looks pretty amazing, and would save some cash. I interested to hear what they have to say...

I'm sure they'll give you a good recommendation. If you end up with the XS30, I can't wait to hear what you think. Be sure to report back with a review. Good luck.
