What is the easiest way to play files from sites like HD Tracks etc. What kind of hardware/software/gear is required. I would like to see if there is an audible difference for me.

Can you put them on a thumb drive, plug that into the Oppo. If so, will tbe Oppo play them in these hi res formats? how is your hard drive connected to the Oppo, USB?

And of course there's iTunes, on a Mac you'd normally add BitPerfect, TOSLink is the easiest connection here.

I've never tried it with a thumb drive but I imagine it would work fine. I'm assuming the 83 is capable of playing FLACs. If not, you may be able to convert to another format.

The tracks I've downloaded from HD tracks are quite big flac files so you will need a large thumb drive to storage these flac files when using a thumb drive for storage.

I don`t have the Oppo, but the squeezebox will play HD Track files from thumb drive, so i would imagine Oppo would as well.

Interesting, it seems USB to the Oppo would be the simplest way for me to try this format out. Is the sound quality similar to sacd, the blu ray formats, or even better?

if you have a slightly old computer that your not using (or can buy a new cheap ($) or used) you can put win xp or win 7 (don't use Vista and avoid win 8 if you can) on it and leave it running and use it as a music server. you can use JRiver to organize and play your music. to get it from your computer to your receiver, unless the receivers you have incoporate ethernet for networking you can put the pc close the your receiver and use one of these two DAC's to get the music to your receiver via analog RCA cables. they are both good for up to 96/24 music. Audio Quest Dragon Fly www.audioquest.com/usb_digital_analog_converter/dragonfly-dacHRT Music Streamer II + highresolutiontechnologies.com/music-streamer-ii-plusI have read very good things about the dragon fly and have heard it at BB Magnolia Theater showroom. I do use the Music Streamer at work and it sounds great. it's connected to a mini X amp! best of luck, with whatever you do. also, you don't have to have a dedicated pc, you can use whatever pc you have. the reason i mentioned a dedicated pc is this way you can leave it on and just use it for music giving all the resources to the music and freeing up your other pc for all of your other uses. keep us posted.

Interesting, it seems USB to the Oppo would be the simplest way for me to try this format out. Is the sound quality similar to sacd, the blu ray formats, or even better? the 83 won't support all file format types. the 90 series and above will. idealy, you can go to hdtracks and download a free (yes, they have a couple of free samples) 96/24 sample file. copy it to a thumb drive and see if it plays in the 83 for you. also you can copy other file formats to the thumb drive and test them out too. this way you know in advance what will and won't play (or play nice) with the 83. once you what plays best (or at all) you should consider getting a 1 or 2 TB USB drive because hi-rez files take up a lot of space and your thumb drive won't be able to hold too many to many of them. some 96/24 albums are 1gb or larger sometimes. best of luck.

I also have heard of problems playing some FLAC files with the BDP-83.
I currently use a USB flash drive connected to the front USB port of my BDP-95 containing my "audiophile recordings" and it plays FLAC files perfectly. I hear an audible click from the OPPO when it reconfigures itself depending on the file it is playing - i.e. different bit depth/sampling rates.
Otherwise, I play CD/SACD/DVD-A discs, stream from iTunes via an Apple TV, or stream via Playback (DLNA) directly to the OPPO.

Anyone know if a PS3 plays these files?. Thanks for all the info so far. Maybe Apple Tv might be a workable solution.
