Unfortunately you never know how far down the line the pressing of your CD was so there could be many errors in it which can produce distortion/less then pristine copy of the master which expanses why some of my CD's suck , so in saying that it all depends on the CD and the mastering if it sounds better or not , I have some CD's that sound just as good and others that are not and that goes for some of my poorly made sa-cds etc.. too.

Yes, my bad. What I meant was the Apple TV will stream anything iTunes can play, albeit output at 48 kHz/16 bit. Thanks for pointing that out AudioHTIT and allowing me to clarify. C

I have my files on a terabyte hard drive and backed up on another. I play the files through my Squeezebox Touch off my network. The hookup is hard wired through my router. I CAN play those files from my Oppo 93, but I have lots of files and that is SO slow in terms of indexing the drive. The squeezebox does not take any time to initialize since the server software keeps it up to date.

^ I also do something very similar. In my case, my Squeezeboxes (2 of them) are Ethernet hardwired and the HDD is attached to a laptop with a network share. Works great with my phone and tablet as remotes.
However Oppo's UI leaves a lot to be desired!

Interesting, it seems USB to the Oppo would be the simplest way for me to try this format out. Is the sound quality similar to sacd, the blu ray formats, or even better? the 83 won't support all file format types. the 90 series and above will. idealy, you can go to hdtracks and download a free (yes, they have a couple of free samples) 96/24 sample file. copy it to a thumb drive and see if it plays in the 83 for you. also you can copy other file formats to the thumb drive and test them out too. this way you know in advance what will and won't play (or play nice) with the 83. once you what plays best (or at all) you should consider getting a 1 or 2 TB USB drive because hi-rez files take up a lot of space and your thumb drive won't be able to hold too many to many of them. some 96/24 albums are 1gb or larger sometimes. best of luck. I had never tried a thumb drive but went to hdtracks yesterday to test. I downloaded the demo flac file and plugged into my Onkyo. Awesome sound! Looks like I'll be buying some larger thumb drives! Thanks for posting!!!

J River Media Center 18 and Gizmo application works well. You can also download flac files to USB stick or USB hard drive. If you have the ability to stream between your PC and AVR or pre-pro (or Oppo) it's pretty easy to do. I will second Hemster's comments regarding Oppo's streaming UI. The Bryston USB transport accepts USB stick or hard drive, and is controlled via your ipad or andrioid tablet,. They are putting out a newer one that has more powerful streaming options. Kind of pricey though.
