Spikes isolate the speaker from the floor. This in turn means less damping so you should get a better bass response. Make sure you get speaker positioning, toe-in etc. just right before putting in the spikes. They're a pain to move afterwards!

You can also build short platforms/ speaker plinths to get away from that deadening carpet.

Anyone have a link to some spikes they are happy with?
**edit**
I'd also take recommendations on some isolation spikes for my UPA-1/ECR-1 stack, if anyone has any they'd like to share.

The Granite is a great idea. I have porcelain tile flooring. I used solid oak material as the platform, and on the runners which contact the floor, I used insulated sliders/gliders, and Soundcare Superspikes between the speakers (Monitor Gold GR20s) and the platform. The Superspikes are spikes within a rubber casing. A spike that doesn't scratch. www.soundcare.no/Attachments:

Any place the sells granite counter tops should be able to help. They ussually have extras that they will part with fairly cheaply. Will also cut to size.

Lar's sub shows a SubDude, I switched from spikes to SubDudes and noticed a large improvement in resonance (I didn't have room for both). However I have a raised floor and a concrete slab would probably benefit less.
