So i have the upgrade bug, sort of, and am looking at using my Onkyo 706 AVR as pre/pro with XPA-5....
I guess i'm wondering if sonically there is great deal of difference or just subtle... thanks

Yes, there will be a very noticable difference in SQ, clarity, etc. As has been said an infinite # of times before regarding this topic, the amps in most receivers just don't cut it. I have the 807 and I only use it as a processor.
Get separate amps and you'll be more than happy!!!! ;D

thanks for reply... So not to be too stupid, do i just use the Onkyo preamp outs to the XPA-5 input ?
then the speakers connect to xpa-5 (including sub or not?) thanks

Correct. But not the sub the sub has its own amp
