Just got my copy of stereophile March 2013: The Entry Level section, Emotiva: Made with love.
"stereophile" Stephen Mejias(NJ guy) was given a tour at HQ. You do need to read about the tour as I had to Read this 2x's. The guest maybe had a Bad flight or had Pre-Judgments before the visit. Dan said "We're trying to give the high-end listening experience to guys who work for a living, who have kids, cars, mortgages." Seems the guest is single, no car(takes a train to work) and has a Cat,..which Dan's statement does not apply to him with the response "..Emotiva's products have never fully resounded with me..." "Emotiva gear, while mostly in my price range, has never seemed to fit my lifestyle." It goes on saying Stephen went to different Sound Rooms listing to Emotiva gear and talking to the staff.
It's safe to say Stephen was looking for a Professional experience (Maybe McIntosh or Bryston is more his liking). Maybe he does not like Southern hospitality or that Laid back style.

I know I only choose audio gear that fits my lifestyle, and to hell with how it sounds.

It was just a matter of time before this 'type' of reviewer showed up. I consider that a good sign.

Actually, as we all know, listening habits styles preferences...what have you....vary.
I personally believe he's missing out on the value but that's his decision.

Yeah, wasn't he the same reviewer that wouldn't buy an Onkyo AVR because he though it might contribute to global warming? (Also employees at the Onkyo factory in China were forced to work 41 hours per week.)

Maybe he doesn't care for that distinct southern drawl in his amps?

Maybe he doesn't care for that distinct southern drawl in his amps? Good point! My ERC-2/XPA-5/Emo speakers do make Norah Jones sound ever so slightly like Paula Deen besides that Southern sibilance.

I have no idea who Paula Deen is. I have Norah's first album. She has a very distinctive voice. Knowing who her daddy is I'm surprised she doesn't have more of an Indian accent. Too bad she doesn't play the sitar.

Did we all read the same article? I considered it a very positive review of Emo, of Dan & Cathy, and of the products and their sound. Within the Stephen Mejiasphere, this was an "I like it" review.

Norah doesn't play the sitar but her paternal half sister, Anoushka Shankar, does. (skip to 1:55 for a close up ..... wow!) Paula Deen is a TV cooking show star from Savannah, Georgia y'll.

All through the 70's and most of 80's I read stereo review. In fact I just told my wife the other day I was sorry I got rid of all my Mag's.
Last month I bought a stereophile mag because there was a great looking amp on the cover. I got home and started to read it. The cool amp was $50,000.00 then I saw some really cool speakers and they were just $40,000.00.
By the time I was done it left a sour taste with me. My god if you want to listen to good sound you have to spend $200,000.00. RIGHT, Give me a break. I could hire Led Zeppelin for that. I'm Sorry I just cant buy into all this.
All the discussion about this cable and that wire and tube's do this and transistors do that.
It's just all mental masturbation to me.
I will not be wasting my money on another stereophile mag. They are to cheep and a really good stereo mag would cost around $25,000.00.

Heh. Good one.
Yes, audiophilia is largely a land of myth and fable inhabited by vulgarians and status-seekers with more money than brains. *Stereophile*'s mission is to pander to their conceits, not to provide any objective information about audio products.

So I'm assuming that gear is aimed more at someone like Tiger Woods or a person with a similar type of income...hahah. It's just hilarious at how 90% of what is showcased is for 10% of the audiofile customer base.Maybe Stereophile needs another Magazine subscription called "Stereophile for the other 90%" which wouldn't have $50,000 items on the cover lol, and of course would only be $1 a month heh.

You, Know I have given this some thought and should embrace all of this.
When I was a child of ten I wanted speakers so bad. But as a kid didn't have any money so I used what I could find.
A old pine board I cut in three then I used a piece of cardboard for the front attached to a wooden yard stick I cut. Finley a old speaker from a radio with sone wire out the back.
I hooked it up and it worked and sounded GOOD well I was ten and it worked, OK. But if I use that same design I bet I could get in on some "new Bohemian recycled" speaker build. I could charge around $75,000.00 EACH for them.
They would be the HIGHEST thing in LO FI.
They would be the "GREEN" speaker of the decade.
YA,YA,YA, That's the ticket!!!!
Then I could afford to buy all the other goobly goop.

Ya wanna have some fun? Check out the responses to Stereophile's "review" of the D'agostino $55k/pr. monoblocks. I really take John Atkinson to task for his failure to run both monoblocks thru his full testing procedure. And why did he fail to do so? Because he had a deadline to meet and he was concerned that the 2nd amp would blow up as did the first one. Shameless. www.audioasylum.com/forums/critics/bbs.htmlAnd then he tries to curry favor by claiming to tell the truth. But not the whole truth. And this is exactly why I will never buy that rag again, it is worthless... -RW-

I get Stereophile now because they had some really low rate like $5 a month. When that magazine comes I look at it and it is in the trash either later that day or the next day because what's the point. I can't afford 95% of the stuff they review or talk about and I don't put much credence in what they say anyway because just how many adjectives for superlatives can you keep recycling, or how many nonsense phrases can you keep making up to keep your advertisers happy? It's a nice diversion, though. I think it is a blessing not to have the money to throw away on all that overpriced stuff.

I like Stephen's writing and have even enjoyed a fun email or two with him. He needs to come to Emofest! Or come listen in to my Emosurround setup.
