As the title explains..... thought I would ask some of you knowledgeable folk about HDCD format, I only have one album that I know of in this format which is Neil Young - Mirrorball, is it just a different bitrate or what and can you actually notice an improvement in it or just a gimmick. I now have the ERC-1 which plays this format so thought I would ask my fellow loungers.
Thanks Chad

I own a bunch that are hdcd encoded but never listened to HDCD decoded signals due to no players that supported it. I'm going to be listening very shortly though now that I see the foobar plugin

I have a bunch of HDCD-encoded discs (all of the Grateful Dead catalog is HDCD-encoded) and all of my players for the past 10 years (Denon and Oppo) have supported HDCD. And yes, it does sound noticeably better than a regular CD...

I have some regular CDs that sound much better than some of my HDCDs. I think it depends a lot more on the overall care taken in the process than the method of encoding.

If you have a well mastered CD adding HDCD encoding makes a noticeable improvement to the sound quality. If you have one of the Emotiva CD players, ERC-1 or ERC-2, listen to any of the Reference Recordings HDCD encoded albums and see what you think. All of the albums in the Reference Recordings catalog are exceptionally well engineered and are amongst the best sounding music I have listened to. I am addicted to Reference Recordings' offerings. Try some of their Samplers and see for yourself what a great bargain they are. I now have over 100 of their albums and love everyone of them. Just click on the link below. www.referencerecordings.com/THE ABSOLUTE SOUND Magazine 2011 High-End Audio Buyers' Guide said that Reference Recordings has the BEST AUDIOPHILE LABEL RECORDINGS in the industry. Many of their releases are Grammy Award winners.

So with hdcd you effectively get 24/44.1 sound from a cd. (Well 20bits, but you probably only get 20bits effective from 24bits anyway.
Looks like its in decline. Guess people are moving to HD downloads, and or not caring about increasing dynamic range since they've compressed the range so much already.
