This indie production stars Jennifer Lawrence of "The Hunger Games" fame (she actually made this first) as a tough 17yo girl living dirt poor in the Ozark's who's father, a jailed meth cooker, pledges the family home to get out on bond. Now, he's missing and if he doesn't show up for a court date in a few days they will loose the house and timber tracks that go with it. Lawrence's character "Ree" sets out to find him and goes poking her nose in places where she has been warned to stay out of. Ree, undaunted and with the thought of herself, two siblings and mentally ill mother with no place to go, finds herself in life threatening situations as the movie progresses. I'm not spoiling the plot, so you'll have to see it yourself to find out what happens.
Lawrence, while not very good in "The Hunger Games" IMHO, does an amazing job in this movie. Her acting is very convincing, even mesmerizing at times. This low budget film is expertly filmed in dramatic, poverty ridden surroundings with the overall hue of the cinematography bleak and dark as is the future of the characters. Many Missouri locals were used in the filming and it had a perfect touch of docudrama within it.
It won several awards including Best Picture and Best Screenplay at The Sundance film festival.
It's amazing how a good story told through the talent of good acting can supplant all the whiz bang computer created offerings and create a gem like this.
Highly recommended.
