Audio-Technica ATH-ESW9A Man, picked these bad boys up for $189.99. Couldn't pass them up Retail is $350. Not that it even matters how much they were, but dang they sound good. Anybody else have any suggestions on HPs? I have a brand new addiction. Anybody know how these will handle beefed up? I just have them solely for my laptop and Ipod. Now I want to purchase things to make them sound better.....CRAP!!! So here we go. Nice little review. First off, I haven't let these things break in at all. Thanks for the tip, I will let them burn through 48hrs of continuous show stopping rock and roll. Also I am simply testing these from my laptop without a crazy sound card. They aren't amplified. Natural, Natural, Natural. Just what my ear wants. Nothing is forced. Bass: Just outstanding. Great punch and very well balanced. For you bass freaks you would probably seek something different. I like a very subtle Bass that hits when it should and doesn't when it shouldn't. I ran a 1080p bass test on them and could feel it in my body. Crazy man, crazy. Treble: So crisp. I love a good high ;D. They almost sound as if they are going to cross the threshold and your ears tense....but relax my friend, no tension here. Lead guitar with screeching solos? Check...rinse and repeat. Lowell George is speaking to me through the heavens VIA my super cans bending that high E. Mids: It's ALIVE!!! That's what they do, filling in all the spaces between thud and screech. Doing it well. Very well. Man...I need my baby wipes again. Only complaint is they are not over the ear. They are a little pinchy on my ears. I have a big head for my big brain. No fault to the cans, I knew they would put pressure on my ears. I attend a lot of Widespread Panic shows. I have 90% of the shows I have been to Lossless. It's like you are there. My All Emo setup at home has ruined my ears for anything less than perfect. It has turned me into a total snob. I am happy. I am reliving my music collection. That is a good sign. That's how you know you hit the jackpot. I give em a 8.5/10. At full retail $350 there are many other sets to choose from. Are these the best? I will let you know when I very quickly get a new pair to do a comparison on. They are $225 on Amazon right now, and I would say worth every penny. "Been a year since she ran away, yes that guitar player should could play."

Also, have there been any rumors about Emo designing a set of cans? I have been away from the forum for a while.

Get the V-Moda headphones. Trust me, you'll love them! I have the V-Moda Crossfade LP2 and they are amazing! Here's my review of them. BTW, they carry a 2-yr warranty and a 50% off anything from V-moda for life!

My experience:
HD800's are pure heaven, if you can swing open-back. I ended up canceling all my plans yesterday because of how amazing Miles Davis sounded over these beauties.
Ultrasone Edition 8 are very nice for a closed-back design with a fairly pronounced bass; really well made, full of amazing soft leather. The earcups or a little tight, but they work fine for me.
Audio-Technica ATH-M50 are completely amazing for the price. I bought them on a random whim after people raved about them in the Lounge (there was a thread about sub-$150 headphones). Everything they said was true. The cans took about 12 h to break in properly (out of the box they were terrible), but now they basically match the Ultrasones for a tiny fraction of the price. Quite comfortable too, but you may not be into the 180º-pivoting earcups.
I also played with Grado RS2i and thought they were fun. They definitely warm up the sound. The earcups are terribly uncomfortable, but I guess ymmv.
For when headphones are too unwieldy, my backup is Shure SE535 IEMs, and I also can't say enough good things about them. The bass they produce comes out of absolutely nowhere. Another fantastic feature is sound isolation. I always use them while flying.
Cheers!

I will definitely be ordering a pair of the MODA.

There are some alternative pads available for grados which are more comfortable. I'm a Grado fan. I even visited their shop in Brooklyn a few years ago. the best sound I ever heard was from a pair of vintage HP-1s by brother owned for a few years. He eventually went to an all Stax setup (like this one. www.6moons.com/audioreviews/stax2/stax.html)I personally preferred the HP-1s overall. (not that his setup wasn't bad, far from it!, but I liked the Grado presentation better.)

I am leaning towards the FiiO E07k or the E17 as an inexpensive DAC/amp option for being on the road. At home will be a whole new story. I have been dying for an excuse to purchase something from Emotiva. Can anybody say XDA-2?
@ Hemster Why do I have a pair of V-Moda M-100's in my shopping cart right now? As somebody who isn't a crazy bass guy I feel like I have to try them. All of my speakers have always been so natural, it would be nice to have something to punch out my rock and roll and crazy electronic music. I look forward to auditioning them. They seem to be the end all of rock and roll cans. I looked at the LP2 and everyone was saying they are much muddier.

sennheiser hd600 - needs Good hp amp I'd second this, 600's and 650's are great. I've always wanted to try some ortho hps. The hifiman he-500s are on my short list.

Good review, Pop. I have started with the Grado 80's and moved to the 325is. I also own the Audio Technica ATH-M50 and the wireless Sennheiser RS-170. My goal was to get the Wireless Sennheiser when I was moving around the house or working outside or in the garage. The ATH-M50's are for harder hitting music-Rock, Heavy Metal, R&B, rap and Reggie because of the bass and the Grado is for Jazz. The Sennheiser RS-170 is has very good mids, highs and the bass is okay.
The only thing I don't like about them is with my old Sennheiser RS-120's you would get a warning with crackling noise before you went out of range and with these they just drop off completely-no sound, but sound quality is much better than the RS-120.
The Grado 80's are great to start with, the 325 add more bass and more midrange and are just a bigger brother to the 80's. The 80's with a headphone amp are surprisingly good. I use the 80's for light jazz, but maybe giving them to my son. I use the 325's for jazz and blue grass, although I could use them with anything. I caught these on sale as well. I'm also using a Headphone Amp, a Vincent KHV-111MKII.

Cool – I would love to find some alternative pads that work for me as I really appreciate the Grado sound for some of the music I like. Do you have any recommendations? Grado makes various pads. Small Flat Pad - These were the original the stock pad for the SR80. They no longer available from Grado. S-Cushion - Also called the Comfy Pad this cushion comes stock on the Grado SR60i, SR80i, and SR125i. L-Cushion - also known as Bowls this cushion is standard issue with the SR225i, SR325i, RS2i, and RS1i. G-Cushion - Also known as Bagel Pads or Salad Bowls, this cushion is standard issue with the GS1000i and PS1000. There is also the Flat Pad - Not manufactured by Grado. These are available at TTVJ and are identical to the original small flat pad. www.ttvjaudio.com/TTVJ_Flat_Pads_p/aat0000100.htmPads made for the Senn 414 will also fit but are yellow. many have reported that these are more comfortable than the original pads. Check out head-fi.com for some reviews.
