My xpa's all hum when first turned on,... Following about 90 seconds they quiet and there is no more hum. Certainly could be Problems with the current going to the amp. If they checked it at Emo HQ with a good line and it didn't exist than that might explain the issue. Pita with these giant amps, but try moving them to a different room / outlet and see if it changes, or try plugging it in to a power conditioner if you have one.
I only mention this because my XPA-5 exhibits no hum when connected to my Panamax, but does when directly connected to the wall. (Very low noise though) worth a shot!

>> It may not be a tough job but that's not right. Your suggestion should have been done in Emotiva's shop when they had the amp. The same "very act of removing and replacing" could also result in having both amps humming, so to me, it's not worth the shot.<< Whatever, dude. But nothing ventured, nothing gained. If you end up with 2 humming xformers, this gives you extra ammunition with which to fire back at Emo.... -RW- Dude, I was just stating my opinion... what's wrong with having different opinions? You see the negative result as an ammunition to fire back at Emo... I see it as a reason for them not to cover warranty repair since you did it without authorization. If it's under warranty, why not let them fix it. Unless of course they said go ahead, then that's a different story.

My xpa's all hum when first turned on,... Following about 90 seconds they quiet and there is no more hum. I own or have owned (1) XPA-5, (1) XPA-2, and (2) XPA-100's. They've all been dead silent. I wouldn't be happy with an amp that hummed. My XPA-1L's hummed, chattered, and squealed, but that's another story...

Try the CMX-2 there is a great deal of fluctuations between power companies and location.
I don't know if there is a standard to Average clean power in the USA. So what Emotiva has set as standard transformer hum maybe based on there particular location and filtration.
If they can not repeat your problem it might be hard to replace a transformer.

Wow, that's some new information. If you heard it from day 1, you should have returned that amp under the 30 day trial period. There is NO way I would have waited a year to confront Emo with the problem... -RW- I agree, but then I was anxious to hook up the amps to complete the active crossover project. Where I feel I was misled was when customer support said that they would fix it if I shipped it back. They never said that if I shipped it back they would just send it back as-is. By having 3 XPA-5s and only one of them having this hum I thought CS and I had reached an agreement that it was defective. I'm not the type of person that's going to drag this out much further. If the amp doesn't work for me I'll get rid of it. I was about to do that last month and decided to call customer support first. I was expecting to get a quiet amp back or at least a phone call offering me some options.

Call and ask for Joe Laliberte. He's in charge of service. Tell him this isn't fair or to your liking.... Hey ED: Joe worked in NH at our high end Audio and Video store that you and I discussed when you had your visit.Joe was great at service and did great servicing my bad Sunfire Subs.He also did great work on my Sunfire AMPs.JOE is the BEST.

Just call them and talk to them...it's rare something like this happens. You may feel misled, but it's not emo's style to mislead people. If there's an issue, they will handle it.

"wintermute", have you called Emotiva back and talked with Joe, as another member has suggested? If you don't call and talk with someone, then the situation can not be resolved. We all understand that you are frustrated, but posting about this here isn't solving the issue. I'm sure that Emotiva will take care of you, you just have to call and explain the situation. I've only had one issue with any of the Emotiva gear that I have, and customer service and the tech's were very informative when I spoke with them on the phone.

I think the customer dropped the ball initially. He said the amp hummed from Day 1 and yet did not bother to do anything about it for a year. A year?! How many of you would have waited that long to fix this problem?
In any event, it sounds like Emo should simply supply a new xformer and let him swap it out, it's an easy job...

Are you going to replace them with Outlaws?
It is apparent you don't want these fixed now. ( or am I wrong?)

I'm busy at work so I won't be able to call Emotiva until next week. No plans to replace them. I'll put them in the garage. My HT room and garage share a wall. My HT PC is already in the garage.

The simple fact is that is that all amps (and anything with a a transformer in it) actually produce SOME small amount of mechanical hum. Whether it is audible or not depends on a lot of factors - everything from what the amp is sitting on to the acoustics in your room - and it is impossible to accurately quantify. (Let's say a certain amp is dead quiet when sitting on felt feet, but rattles the walls when sitting on a wooden shelf; is it "noisy" or not?) Whoever checked that amp undoubtedly put it on his bench, ran it, and didn't hear an excessive amount of hum... so it was returned as "no problem found"... [And, yeah, we DO look at things to make sure there's really a problem before we fix them, and that we're fixing the right thing; and you'd be surprised (or not) at how many problems oddly disappear on the way here ] And, no, we aren't going to swap a transformer "just cuz" if we don't find a problem; and, changing a transformer IS a major project so we're NOT going to ask a customer to do it unless there's no alternative. All that said, since we now know that there was a real problem, we will take care of it (as always). Wow, that's some new information. If you heard it from day 1, you should have returned that amp under the 30 day trial period. There is NO way I would have waited a year to confront Emo with the problem... -RW- I agree, but then I was anxious to hook up the amps to complete the active crossover project. In any case, it sounds like all will be taken care of now anyway! (I'm not at all suprised by that of course! .

Hum is not acceptable (at any level) which can be heard from the seating position. If your Emotiva equipment can't be corrected, look at Wyred4Sound Class D ICE amps. They are dead QUIET. Good luck.
