Hoping some of you computer guru's can point me in the right direction to power on and off a PC via IR commands. I really don't need any other control other than power. I do want to be able to completely shut the computer down and have it power up from completely off. I have read some options from standby mode, but I would rather it be off. I also came across some cheap remote kits, but really no info on them. So what reliable options are there?

You know, I asked this question sometime before. There were lots of helpful suggestions. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find anything that would actually turn on the computer. I heard there was something called a power on through a network cable. But I don't know much about that.

It's called "wake on LAN" or WOL, most network cards have it as a feature and a free app on a smartphone can send the packet to turn on your PC.

And some will wake up on general network activity (I know the mac mini does).
For selecting music/videos, I relaly like iPhone/Android control. JRemote for Jriver and Plex for videos etc.

I don't think that the wake on LAN will work since I am using a USB adapter for wi-fi. This may change in the future. However, I don't know how I would work this into my remote control programming. This would certainly require some in depth research.
Once the computer is on, it seems as though there are several options that offer lots of control via IR. However, the most basic ON/OFF functions seem to be the most difficult to control.

You could possibly switch to a wireless access point if its important to you. That would use the internal network cards, assuming they have wol.

I am going to have to get up in the attic and pull some Cat5 anyway. I could pull 2 or put in a switch very easily. The part I am not sure will work with WOL is the control via the remote I will be using.

The OrigenAE HTPC case I use has built in IR control and my HTPC can be turned ON/OFF and controlled by remote. The hardware is built in in my case but the system it uses is from IR Trans they have a few different products available www.irtrans.comAnother company which offers a lot of IR products is Xantech www.xantech.comYou might try looking at these two company's to find something that will help. BTW, Wake-on-LAN is something you need to be able to turn ON a computer from an OFF state, I believe it is built into most computer motherboards.
