Best preamp for Emotiva + B&W

Hi All

After long years to read your forum, it's time for me to post !

In fact i'm a french (so sorry for my english) EMO user since 3 year with a wonderfull XPA-2 !

My question is simple... I want to change my Preamp (actually Sherwood P965)... And want to know your advice about the best Preamp for my configuration...


My speacker:
B&W XT4 + XTC + XT2 and i use 2 PV1 with a SMS-1 velodyne equaliser...

My Amp :
XPA-2 for frount (maybe replaced by two XPA-1L after review and corection...)
XPA-5 for the rest

My needs :
I'm looking for a preamp with Two HDMI 1.4 out (so no emotiva)...
And if possible a good autocalibration (don't specialist but it's easiest...).

Because you can't test emo in french exept if you go with your own Amp... and because XT4 are very rare... impossible for me to test so need advice...

My used is 50% HC and 50% Hifi
I listen to clasical music and Pop rock (strange ^^) and look for US-Action movie in first... when i used HC... (for french film... sound of my tv is OK ).


Actually i'm looking after this product:

- Rotel RSP-1572

- Marantz 7701

- Onkyio PS-SC5509

- Sherbourn PT-7030

Maybe some of you know this product or simply the alience of this mark + emotiva and B&W.

Do they need to be selectable? For $50 you can get an HDMI splitter that will turn one out into two.

That might give you more flexibility in terms of pre pros you're looking at.

Hi there. If you wait - Emotiva is coming out with a good surround sound processor the xmc-1. However, it may be a very long wait.

howdy and welcome to the emotiva lounge. i have experience with the Onkyo pre-amp line. I currently have a PR-SC5507P and it has served me very will with my emotiva XPA-5/UPA-2 setup with my Axiom speakers. I have no doubt that the 550x line is a very good and reliable pre-amp for your needs.

The Marantz 7701 looks to be a very good pre-amp also with a few more features over the onkyo line.

I think any of these pre-amps would do a very good job depending on the feature set you want or need. i think even above that is the amp that is going to power your speakers and the DAC that converts your digital signals.

One other potential issue with waiting for the XMC-1 is that the last time we heard, it would only have 1 HDMI out. Things may have changed since then but that is the last I know of it, at least

XMC-1... effectively it can be a very long wait (i wait since too long and only had 1hdmi at this price... ).

I had actualy a hdmi splitter but never works corectly... (damned HDMI ).

I notice too, UMC-1 had probs with hdmi splitter... Is that the same with UMC-200 ?

Always hear Rotel + B&W are very good... and Emotiva amp very neutral... So i wonder if Rotel + emo > B&W is maybe the clever choice...

But 1572 don't have an audissey or newb's autosound... (i wan't a thing like this because my listen room is horible to corectly configure... and my velodine sms-1 make incredible good job... but only for basses ).

Listen room:
My soil is a mix of Beton (concrete) and steal...
My wall are in beton, big glasses and real stone (ashlar) and had no real curtain and no carpet...
For a surfaces of 110 sq yd (90m2)

I use a very simple, EBay sourced, inexpensive HDMI splitter, no switching, it just has one input and 2 outputs, that's all. If I don't want to watch one I simply don't turn it on. So I wouldn't let your past experiences with a HDMI splitter affect your decision.

You really do need to do something about that room, concrete, glass and stone, the big 3 enemies of good sound. A rug on the floor and some curtains would make a big difference.

Yes i really must do something (first is a good carpet...).

An other way for dual HDMI...

Buy an OPPO BDP 103 or 105 with theyr dual hdmi OUT...
I need a good new bluray player... and this two hdmi out is maybee the best solution ?
