I guess the honest response is the -5 makes more sense for me as I have an XPA-3 now and realize I should have purchased a few more channels. Well maybe I should get the -7! Seriously the amp power rating would probably be the deciding factor. So many amps and so little money.

I had an XPA-2 and an XPA3 for some time and it was a very nice combination. The extra grunt of the XPA2 for stereo listening was the reason for that choice. I can see an XPA-3 working very well in a number of combinations. For example powering the front 3 with an AVR doing the remainder. Or supplementing a pair of monoblocks, say XPA-1L's that power the front left and right.
The only reason I changed from the XPA2/3 combo to an XPA-5 was space.
Cheers Gary

this is a great question. I had an XPA-3 powering my front three channels with an UPA-500 powering the four surround speakers (one channel was not used on the 500). Then changed to a XPA-5 with one UPA-200 (used only with 7.1 material). Now stepped up to a XPR-2 for the front left/right and the XPA-5 powering the center and surrounds. I agree with a past poster that the added power for 2-channel listening is very nice! but I do often wonder about an XPR-3 for the front three channels.

2 XPR-1's and a XPR-5 for 7.1 or like I do I use the two remaining channels on the XPR-5 to power my reference monitors in zone 2. Works out great and besides, 400wpc or 500wpc, what the diff? Nothing...

Bootman- like your thinking. I decided to upgrade my UPA-5 while waiting for the XMC (I guess I have some time). I was thinking about an XPA-2 for the fronts and an XPA-3 for the center and surrounds. But then I got to thinking that I would really like everything up front on one amp; wala, an XPR-3.
I'm going 7.2 in my new HT so I can use the UPA-5 for the four surrounds. So come on XPR-3.

The XPA-3 exists principally to power the front three speakers , with an AVR to power the surrounds and rear channels. I don't really see the same role with the XPR-3 - a UPA-300 perhaps though, should the XPA-3 become discontinued.
