This is the beginning of my next project, which i am going to keep very quiet about. I just get way to many emails and pms sugessting i do this or that. I've always done this on my own and want to keep it that way. Build it for me because it's mine. This is a very nice DAC and pre amp. It has 2 coax inputs, 1 toslink, 1 AES and 1 USB. Two sets of outputs, one balanced and one single ended. Really cool thing is, it has an analog input but not your usual input. It converts it to digital then back to analog. Good on energy to as it only uses 8 watts There is no power off button, unless you unplug it or switch it off from the back. Volume is in .5 increments. 0 to 100. These retail for $2,000 but got it for $1,150. Looks brand new to me. I will post my impressions later along with my NC400 impressions and a photo shoot of my new system lol ;D A Vista Audio Phono-1 MKII will be ordered soon for my vinyl playback.

I love the understated look of the Bel Canto. Silver and black really works!

That's quite interesting. I didn't know that about the analog input. But it's cool that it works that way.

The Bel Canto Dual-Differential DAC2.5 Control Center features an outstanding 122dB dynamic range and our proprietary low noise digital to analog convertor core. Including five 24/192 digital inputs, 24/96 USB input and a 24/192 ADC analog input, the DAC2.5 integrates and controls all of your audio sources including an analog input for a phono preamp or Home Theater Bypass. The front panel features a single multifunction control knob that selects inputs and controls volume level for both the main outs and ¼” front-panel headphone jack. The headphone jack is driven by a dedicated DAC/Amplifier circuit that optimizes its output and eliminates any compromises in the main signal path. The DAC2.5 also includes our new 8 character alpha-numeric display and the ability to control balance, absolute phase and to rename and disable unused inputs.

I love that you can disable inputs. Much nicer for cycling through if you only have two connected.

Just some listening yesterday, I can tell the DAC on the 2.5 sounds very different then the one in the XDA-1. The high don't sound rolled off but more extended. But then again i didn't think the highs were rolled off on the XDA-1.
The volume control is much more smooth on the 2.5 compared to the XSP-1, much more natural and i can pick a great volume level rather quickly. But i'll say it again, the XSP-1 does have a smooth volume control, the 2.5 is just smoother IMO.
I have yet to test the 2.5 with my NC400's. So more critical listening ahead.

Matt, can i ask why you are picking the Vista Audio Phono-1 MKII for your phono? I was shocked at how inexpensive it was when I looked it up online.

I just need the board and transformer. Boris (owner) made a great design. I like it a lot It'll compete with some of higher priced ones.

Interesting.... From an engineering perspective, I'm usually *more* shocked that anyone can justify spending much *more* that that for a phono preamp. A phono preamp is actually a relatively simple device, and it shouldn't take $10,000 worth of parts to get it right (or even $500 worth). I haven't heard that one but, from the specs, it looks like it could be very good. Matt, can i ask why you are picking the Vista Audio Phono-1 MKII for your phono? And I thought this was going to be a "for sale" thread. I always liked Bel Canto stuff. Keith, I have a hand-made phono preamp that was put together in 1978 by Rupert Neve. I wouldn't take less than $10K for it. And no, it's not for sale.

I bet his next DAC will be a Da Vinci DAC right after he completely redesigns the flimsy flimsy chassis ;D
