This beautiful old song was one of my sweet Mom's favorite songs. (For Jazz/Gospel Lovers Only!) From WIki: "Just a Closer Walk with Thee" is a traditional gospel song that has been covered by many artists. Performed as either an instrumental or vocal, "A Closer Walk" is perhaps the most frequently played number in the hymn and dirge section of traditional New Orleans jazz funerals. (Frequently played at a slow tempo.) As I was going through this thread, my wife suggested I post this version of Just A Closer Walk With Thee. This one's for your mom, Chuckienut - complete with a New Orleans funeral: If you've never seen Treme, it's a great show. I highly recommend it. Then there's this version, which is billed here as Wynton Marsalis and Eric Clapton, but it's really them backing up Taj Mahal. Taj Mahal might have been the guest artist during this show, but he's certainly front and center here: And since we're already in the Lincoln Center with Wynton and Eric, I might as well post this. It's a bit of a cheat, since it's a Derek and the Domino's song, but rules be damned, I say:

Wow...that's taking "no overdubs" to an extreme. Very cool concept.

This was originally posted on the eve of his team's return to earth and became a huge hit:
If you haven't read his book, An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth, I highly recommend it. Great insight into goal setting and expeditionary behavior.

I don't know if it's fair to call a spiritual a cover, but this is a beautiful rendition of I Shall Not Be Moved:
And since I seem to be in a Ry Cooder mood tonight (that version of I Shall Not Be Moved was produced by Ry Cooder, and he plays the slide on the track as well), here's one of my favorite covers of an old country song - you know, back when country music had soul:

The finest cover ever of this classic Hoagy Carmichael song (IMO). Take that Diana Krall! Is she on Ambien?

The finest cover ever of this classic Hoagy Carmichael song (IMO). That's a fine version, but I have to respectfully disagree that it's the finest:

Bluescale, I definitely understand, because I love Ella and Satchmo together or individually. Here is one of my favorite Ella performances with Ben Webster. She is magnificent and jazz vocal perfection! I saw Louis Armstrong at the UW in Seattle way back and his concert was one of the two best I've ever attended both performance and sound wise. Peter, Paul and Mary was the other. I love the Norah cover above because that was the how I heard Hoagy present it on a piano on a TV appearance way back. It reminded me of a late night piano bar performance. I worked in school at a first class restaurant with fancy piano bar. They played slow and soft favorites with customers around the piano, drinking and smoking. Norah's performance on this classic song sets that scene perfectly for me. After the bar closes I ask Norah to go home for some coffee with me ........ oh never mind, I'll get into that story another time.

The best way to cover Dylan is to not try to cover Dylan:
Edit - The first video I posted was a fugazi. This is the real thing.

This one is for Metaldude. I've been checking out Karise Eden since he posted some of her stuff in another thread. The Paula chick is pretty damn good also:
