I'm thinking of upgrading and will get the XSP-1 and a matching amp.
The EMO website says of the XPA-2 Amplifier "Topology: fully discrete, dual differential" and "Input topology: dual differential input."
Does that mean the Amplifier is fully balanced to match the XSP-1 Differential Reference Preamp? Or does it simply mean the amplifier has XLR plugs? Do I care if it isn't fully balanced; will I hear a difference?
Otherwise, what are my choices? I like that the XPA-2 cabinet matches my XPA-5 (shelving symmetry...).
Sincerely /b

No, it's not fully balanced.
In terms of size and looks, the XPA-2, 5, 3 and 1's all have the same dimensions.

The xpa-2 will benefit from balanced cabling as much as any other device benefits from balanced cabling. There will be differential circuitry at the balanced inputs to recreate the single ended signal before amplification.

The XPR-1, XPA-1 and XPA-1L are Emotiva's only "fully balanced" amps in the current lineup.
Look for the terms "Quad Differential", "Differential Reference" or simply "Fully Balanced" in the description verbiage on the product pages.

The XSP-1 and XDA-2 sound like a great 2 channel pair.
Another option is a pair of XPA-1L's that could stack into the same 4U space as an XDA-2, but that's a lot of heat and they would need good ventilation to be stacked. The advantage is that you'd have Class A amps that are fully balanced (at a $600 premium).

Do I care if it isn't fully balanced; will I hear a difference? Sincerely /b It wouldn't concern me (it didn't when I owned one) that the XPA-2 isn't fully balanced. I doubt you'd hear a difference. Go by what your budget says. The XPA-2 could be the best amplifier value on the planet. If you've got more money to burn, go with XPA-1L's, XPA-1's or the mighty XPR-1. You might notice some improvement with either of these depending on you ancillary equipment and room. .. .

Not fully balanced. If you want fully balanced you are looking at more than 1k usually

I have been happy with xpa-3 in 2 channel use. Using balanced cables between the preamp and amp. If the xpa2 and xpa1 or 1L are even better I would see it diminishing returns. I would probably have tried and upgraded if acquiring emo gear be not as expensive of a premium in Canada.
