I currently have a XPA-5 which powers my 5.1 set-up. I'm thinking about getting an XPA-2 just to power the front stereo. I want to retain the XPA-5 just to power the centre and rears, thus leaving two channels unused. Are there any problems not fully utilising all the channels?

No real world problem. However if you are partying 24/7 you may strain the amp modules. But only if you are partying 24/7 at max volumes. NOt because of the unused channels but some or most of the unused channels power will be routed to the channels that are being used and if you are pushin g it at maximum 24/7 you may run into some strain on the amp blades. At least that's the general impression I got from Lonnie. In regular applications even if you are rocking it should be no problem.

Use the spare 2 channels for Zone 2.
If you are chasing a big step up in stereo I'd suggest having a think about a pair of XPA-1's. I've recently done the reverse to what you are contemplating, I went from an XPA-2/3 combo to an XPA-5 and I can't say as I noticed much difference.
Cheers Gary

I do exactly what you are thinking of doing. No problems whatsoever. I have my center channel plugged into the center on the XPA-5 and the surrounds into the outer channels. I also prefer the XPA-2 for stereo over the XPA-5.

You won't hurt anything to NOT use two channels.
You actually will get a little more power on the other channels, and you'll have a bit more reserves for dynamics.

Kung Fu Man- I would be interested in a swap my 3 for your 5. I am running an XPA2 for fronts and the three for center and surrounds, but I want to play with dual centers (or maybe zone two later). Drop me a PM if you would like to work a swap of some sort.

I also want to keep my options open for running a 7.1 set up if I move to a larger place.

I'm using an XPA-2 for mains and 3 channels of an XPA-5 for center/surrounds as well. No problem.

The most likely thing you will hurt running 2 channels is your ears.
