One sounds great - the other farts. I'm assuming a blown woofer. Report after replacement...

It's not farting. It's simply filling out the fart section of the audio spectrum. A very important section that is disputed to exist by some.

Fix those up! Spendor made some nice speakers. I recall listening to some SP3's years ago that sounded real nice. Kinda "polite" sound that wouldn't be so impressive on a viewing of "Attack of the Nuclear Brontosauruses!"
These could make a really nice "second" system nonetheless.

Yeah - when I hooked them up, voices sounded great. When the bass came in, though, one of the two sounded as if it were shaking apart. And, as is typical of all small monitors, their ultimate loudness level IS limited. Therefore I didn't play them loudly, thanks...
All mounting screws were tight on the sloppy one, so I'm assuming that the woofer on that side is physically damaged? Either that or the suspension has come loose of the basket...

What size is the woofer on them? Someone posted about some woofers being sold at cost that look like they might be the right size.

I think the earlier versions of the speaker used higher impedance woofers, but the KEF units in mine have stickers saying "8 ohms."

Although I could replace the originals with inexpensive units, I'd prefer to stick with the original KEF drivers if possible. Although these are fantastic speakers, I don't think that they'll be what I ultimately want to live with. That being the case, I'd like to preserve their resale value to the extent possible. Using genuine KEF replacements should do that.

Yes, the woofers were either 4-ohm or 8-ohms, but the system was 15 ohms in the early versions and 11 ohms in the later versions. You really should know which one you have before you replace anything. Check the site I linked to.

Thanks - My Spendors are definitely the 11-ohm "later" versions.

I posted too soon - After re-examination of my crossovers, I think that due to the three inductors, they are actually the 15 ohm versions. Here's the photo of my actual crossover: Here's the web's photo of a 15-ohm crossover: And here's the web's photo of an 11-ohm crossover: Based on their photos, I'm thinking mine's the 15-ohm?

Agreed, those are 15Ohm versions. The same woofer will work. The down side of the older model (besides having a less sophisticated crossover) is the tweeters can also be pretty harsh with a nasty resonance around 5-6KHz. Some called it a "squawk" sound.

The grills seem to cut back the harshness some, but I can hear what you're talking about!
Any ideas why the woofer works but sounds like it's not attached to anything?

Thanks - I (happily) have no other experience with blown woofers, so I didn't know.
