I am scheduled to receive both my Sherbourn PA 5-200 amp and Onkyo 818 AVR today from FedEx. ;D
My question is this..... the Sherbourn is convection cooled without any fans does it make more sense to stack the Sherbourn on top of the Onkyo for better airflow or visa - versa.
What is the recommended air gap space , between components , for proper ventilation?
Any and all input is Greatly appreciated!

IMO, I wouldn't stack these units. The Onkyo AVRs run pretty warm even being used just as a pre/pro and the power amp is going to generate heat. It might just get a little too warm without a fan!

Highly suggest not stacking, I have an Onkyo AVR in my living room setup only running as a pre/pro and it runs very warm.

cfelliot and mshump thanks for your response. Unfortunately that is not really what I wanted to hear.  I really don't have an equipment rack in my current set up. I currently have my Onkyo 608 / HTPC / Cyberpower UPS and my Media Server all sitting on a old bench. ( I know its kinda Ghetto / don't judge.  ) This configuration isn't ideal and because of space, only allows for 2 components to be on top. I'm confident I can put either the Amp or the Onkyo on top of my media server , but because of the weird shape of my HTPC (looks like antique radio) I'm afraid neither will securely fit on top of it.  Now I will have to go to plan B. First I will have to come up with plan B. I'm assuming the Sherbourn PA5-200 is very similar to the XPA-5. Does anyone here know the actual width of where the feet fall on the bottom of the XPA-5??

For temporary if you can raise the Onkyo up maybe 8 inches to a foot It would allow some better airflow. Maybe some 1x1's and a small piece of plywood.

cfelliot , would the C12 really work in my configuration? Isnt it designed to be mounted on rack ears? Just asking, I don't have any experience with them. Thanks.

Dimensions: 19” wide x 3.25” high x 9” deep (includes feet, foam plugs) From the manual
Looking at the manual it includes feet so it should be able to be used either way. This looks like a very good option pull up the manual and check it out there are a few options for how the air flows.

I would think that you could just raise the Onkyo up even an inch and things would improve. And it might be even with the top of your very cool HTPC.

Another option if you're in a DIY mood:
Build a little frame from 1" x 1" wood the size of the bottom unit.
Paint it black.
Get 1 or 2 low noise computer fans and a 12V wall wart power supply.
Insert the frame between the 2 units blowing up.
Use fans with selectable speed as the low power setting makes very little noise.
I do this on my Bryston 2BLP as it gets a little too warm after a while.

Since it appears that your equipment is out in the open - not in a rack - I would go ahead and stack 'em and see how it goes. You could also place a coupla spacers between the two pieces, thus increasing the airflow between them...

build a new rack.. higher.. if you stack put the hot avr on top with some 2x2 under it..

I wouldn't stack them, because you can cook an egg on an Onkyo (or an Integra for that matter). They've got to be the hottest running AVRs in the business... Better to get a fan for that stack (see "The Cooler Guys" website), and put the Onkyo on top. |

One or two fans might also help... especially if your rack is at all closed in. You could check out our Sherbourn C-12; it's very quiet, thermostatically controlled, very flexible,and moves a lot of air. When stacking components I've used this fan set-up from Middle Atlantic. When I first got these fans I just put them on top of my UPA-7 and I had to deal with a faint vibration hum. I got some felt spacers and put them on the fan and the vibration hum was gone. |

I've got a pair of these sitting on top of my AV8801: www.coolerguys.com/codublfancoc.htmlThey are controlled by the programmable amp cabinet temperature controller in the space below (these come on when the cabinet fan below is triggered on I mean), and they suck hot air up out of the component, and shoot it HORIZONTALLY out the back. Works GREAT! I don't even see them because the shelf above the AV8801 is about 2.5" above it. (The photo attached was taken before their addition, but you can see the amp & HDDVR cabinet below, and the space above the AV8801 for reference). The AV8801 won't get even half as hot as an Onkyo/Integra, but I wanted them just to be sure it stayed very cool anyway... Attachments:

First of all....... Big Thanks! to every one who has posted tips and suggestions , on my original post.I will be exploring many of them. Just to bring everyone up to date I now have the Sherbourn PA 5-200 and the Onkyo 818 in da house! After doing some quick measurements on the location of the rubber feet on both the amp and the avr, I did determine that I could locate the Sherbourn on top of my media server and the Onkyo on top of my HTPC. Unfortunately there are a few other items I normally position on top of my HTPC. So this scenario wasn't ideal. I made a call to Nick in tech support at Emotiva and he seemed to think the PA 5-200 would be fine with the Onkyo on top of it . He said the amp runs fairly cool. So I thought I would at least try it and see what happens. My gear is not in a enclosed case. I wanted the Onkyo on top , cause they do generate some heat. I have owned 2 in the past. I am seriously going to be looking for an open multi shelf AV rack for my gear. That is about 120 lbs. on top of my poor home server. Not the best solution. So temporarily that's where I am at. I have a lot of tweaking yet to do on the Onkyo 818. I plan on working on that tomorrow. I have the Sherbourn Bi-Amping the front R&L plus driving the Center. The Onkyo is driving the R&L Surrounds. Initially all I have to say is WOW!!!  more to follow. Here is a pic of what the stack ended up looking like. ;D  |
