Well just got my replacement XPR-5. First one arrived DOA and Emotiva promptly replaced it with another that I just picked up last night and setup in my theater tonight. The amp sounds about as sweet as can be and is much an improvement over my Yamaha RX-Z11 driving my Def Tech BP-3000TLs, CLR 3000 and BPVX system. Only problem is I can not get the front panel lights to dance at all. They all sit on the fist led and even with my Yamaha at extremely loud levels none of the LEDs even move off led #1. Is there a trick to getting them to dance?

Yes there is a button that changes the mode of the LED's from a fixed light to friday night at the disco. There are multiple modes and it may be two buttons and not one. But either way one of them will get you to feeling groovedalic baby  I believe it's called "peak". Read your manual for more information |

it's the meter button.
Peak just holds the peak level for a little bit.

I too have the Yamaha RX Z11 - planning to add XPR 1 (x2) and XPR 5 this year, can you tell me how you connected this up?

You would just use the pre outs of the Yamaha connected to the amps.

Actually, it's also possible that when the amp went through it's power-on cycle, the ARM processor didn't happen to engage the meters correctly. That happened once with one of my XPR-1s. Going in and out of standby didn't engage the meters either. Powering it off completely from the back panel did the trick. Then the meters danced like the other one.

Never too much power i have a xpr-5 and now have 2 xpr-1's, got rid of the 1l's and the xprs dance and i have klipsch speakers all around at over 100 sensitivity! I love it rock concert loud when i listen, even the movies i like loud but the meters move more with music or sacd, dvd audio discs. The xpr's are great!

okay, either it didn't engage right as Thorcorps suggested or I simply didn't have it loud enough last night (the likely case). Came in this morning and as the wife was at work was able to crank it a bit and they danced the jigg real nice. Now I can turn them off, as I just wanted to make sure it was able to do what it was supposed to.
To answer akitared
question I simply connected the pre-outs on the Yammy to the inputs on the XPR-5 and connected the front, center and surround speakers to the associated speaker terminals on the XPR-5. I have 4 additional speakers SBR, SBL and SPR, SPL being driven by the Yammy, but have the gain adjusted so that everything is level to the XPR-5 output.
Boy I love this amp. Very, very clean and its making my speakers sound like I have never heard them before, esp the BPVX in the backs when listening to 11 channel stereo. Now considering two XPR-1's to drive the fronts and then looking at a new pre-amp or receiver to act as a pre-amp that is a bit more up to date on technology. They RX-Z11 is a nice unit, but I would prefer more HDMI inputs, dual simultaneous output HDMI, on-screen HDMI menu/vol control and some of the newer codecs. Any suggestions?

Those Def Tech BP-3000TLs are rated to be 91 dB / Watt efficient. That's why the led's don't move.
The B&W CM-series speakers I use with the XPR-5 are less efficient. The CMC center is the lowest @ 84 dB or so. So when I want to hear the teevee news loud and clear when we eat in the kitchen on week days some 35 feet from the speakers, the center leds go to about 5, the others don't move. When we watch an action movie on Blu-ray, we can see all five channel leds go to 4 or so during the loudest passages. We sit @ 8 feet distance.
So get inefficient speakers... ;D

If I had the coin, I'd buy the Marantz AV8801. It's a pre/pro so you have to have all external amps, but it's sounds like that won't be a problem with you. ... |

My front speakers (JBL ES100s) are also rated at 91db sensitivity, and I can sure get those XPR-5 meters to 'dance' if I want them to! (See my Blu-ray review of the Bruce Willis movie "Looper" that I posted earlier this week!). No, more likely is that he just doesn't have the meter setting in the right cycle for displaying 'the dance'. darkwavemaster needs to read the manual, and adjust that setting... |
