Hi, guys....I have asked this question before on another thread...I currently own a XSP-1 preamp..I run computer audio and a turntable and maybe in the future pickup a EMO cd player...love it...and a set of MMG...my room is 11.5 x 11.5 x 9 foot ceilings...music is jazz and fusion...with the current sale going on these two amps are in my budget....loudness is not the issue here ...but SQ is...which is the better amp...they are so close...neither of these amps will ever see clipping from me or my girlfriend...we are useing an amp similar to the old BPA-1 that EMO once made...no clipping from it...but SQ could be better...I did look at the XPA -2... But 500 watts of power I could never see useing in everyday listen....so please chim in here and all of the amps I have mentioned...thank you all for your help in advance...Greg

Greg, an XPA-200 should be sufficient to make your Maggies sing - and they do love power! Given your room size, I would think you'd get best value from an XPA-200.

Room size is similar, as well as musical tastes. I have nothing to compare it to, though. People always say Maggies eat as much power as you can feed them, so the more the better. I guess it would be what ever you can budget. 200w/channel is where a lot of people said MMGs should be, so that is what I went with. Remember, Emotiva always posts minimum output, so it may be pushing more than that.

I would recommend the XPA-2 if you at all can. It sounds expensive, but trust me, it really isn't by the years of music improvement you will get out of it. The XPA-200 is not a meet in the middle between the UPA-200 and the XPA-2 though it's a nice amp. It's more of a which flavor of entry level (but still great) emo amp do you want? I happen to have the UPA-2 (not upa-200) which is very similar to the xpa-200. It will leave room for if you ever upgrade your maggies. It's not unheard of 1000 watt monoblocks to push maggies as they like the power.

I would personally pick the XPA-200 over the UPA-200, especially at current sale prices. But as I made the point in another thread, I do wish Emotiva had a true middle ground amp, between the UPA/XPA-200 and the XPA-2. I wonder whether the XPA-3 would fit that bill, even if it is to be used for stereo exclusively.

I'd go XPA-200 with the Maggies, especially since you have the XSP-1. Besides the power (and power supply), the build quality of the XPA more closely aligns with the XSP, and you can use balanced cables if you'd like.

What's the point in using balanced cables if the amp does not have balanced topology? It only has balanced inputs but the signal then is converted into unbalanced. The TS has a balanced preamp, not using it to it's full potential is a waste of money. The XPA-2 is the only way to go that makes sense... other options will be more expensive

I'm running the XPA-2 right now and compared to my old UPA-2 (the previous version of the XPA-200), the xpa-2 is a quicker amp. This may sound trivial but do try to enlist another person's help moving that amp. Also in the future if you ever want to go pseudo "monoblock" mode. The XPA-2 can be bridged to perform as a monoblock as long as the speaker is rated for 8 ohms.

The XPA-2 is the only way to go that makes sense... other options will be more expensive First, the OP asked for an opinion between the UPA-200 and the XPA-200. It's easy to tell someone they should spend more money and get a better amp, but I start by assuming they've set a budget and want a specific opinion. Second, a balanced connection can be quieter and sound better even if the amp is not fully balanced (I have experienced this and often recommend balanced cables if the equipment allows it - their cheap). That the OP chose the XPA-2 is great, I'm sure the extra power has worked out well, however it's my understanding that it also is not fully balanced.
