I was wondering if anyone knows why a company would choose to put a class a/b amp in a subwoofer versus the usual class D amp

Class D are far less expensive to produce but also far less good for use with full range frequencies, that's why it is normally used in subwoofer amps.

Bootman it's only my opinion, but I think many people will agree.

You're right, a lot of people had very good review of NCore new generation class D amps, I never heard them, I just can tell that the old or first generation 15 years ago of class D stereo amp I heard wasn't shine to my ears.

Yeah, I think in days gone by, that class D was generally considered to be "not the best" for full range audiophile applications. However, I think class D tech has came a long way, and a well designed class D amp can certainly "hang with with big boys" now. In fact, many people prefer class D over a traditional a/b design. To each his own I say. If you like it, that is all that REALLY matters in the end.

I am very curious to hear some one. If an owner of very good class D is living near Montreal please invite me to listen your system, I will bring the beer and wine... It is never to late to change my mind about class D amps, I always thinking that these amps were perfect for subs and car audio.

I too would LOVE to hear the NCore's. I lusted after those amps so much, and I was "this" close to selling my XPA-1's to help fund them. However, I do love my XPA-1's and the money was just too tight for me to be able to get them built. Having said that, if when I end up getting a better job again, I will take another look at the NCores. They have created an itch in me that NEEDS to be scratched!

Wait a minute... with your XSP-1 and XPA-1s combo you don't suffer of anything, I know that, I own myself the same combo and I enjoy each minute that I'm listening it.

I wouldn't consider either A/B or D as a reason to choose or exclude a good subwoofer.

Class A/B amps are the "normal" topology. Class D amps are relatively new and are not the most common for subwoofers - except perhaps in car audio.

the reason I'm asking is because I saw that the REL Gibraltar series subs use them
