Hi guys..wanted to post my initial thoughts on my new XDA-1 (my first external DAC). going in I had very low expectations..as I just wasn't a believer that an XDA could make my system sound noticeably better. (I was very happy but always want to be better ). I was also nervous about it going through my AVR that it would be re-processed by the 809 DAC...below are my findings
I hooked it up initially directly to the xpa-5...wow what a difference the sound is coming out of my PSB B6's...its like a blanket was taken off the speakers...clarity,serperation, imaging...and Bass...wow where did that bass come from..I had to check my sub wasnt working somehow..(mind you i thought my setup sounded fantastic before the DAC.
I then set it up exactly how I wanted going into the VCR analog in on the 809. still sounded great...but wanted to make sure...so I A/B'd as quickly as possible with the direct to AMP connect. I could not tell a difference...so through the 809 it stays (direct mode of course)
I also did an instant A/B with the macbook pro to xda1 vs AppleTV to 809 hdmi in (both sources playing the same music in the same mode simucast...with input switichng done by the 809). Both sources played take 5 by Dave Brubek as well as blowing in the wind by peter paul and Mary, and Some nights by Fun ( great demo material for 2 channel)it was a night and day difference between the XDA and the 809 DAC. sooooo clear and 3 dimensional... am very pleased...thanks for all the support here at the lounge!!
