Hello all, how long does it take to get staff approval? Anyways, how would the XPR-2 do as a sub amp? While I'm in school my wife and I are living in a 12x16x8 foot room on my parents property, away from the main building. I am looking for an amp to run two sealed tc sounds epic 12s. I want to avoid pro amps because of fan noise and other personal reasons. I wired the building and I put a 20 amp line with one receptacle for a dedicated line. This was put for an amp of some kind.
I thought it would be cool to buy a full range amp so that when I move out ill have a powerful amp to run my future mains. I would drive the subs for the next 3 years or so then move on to main speakers.
I read where a emotiva rep told another forum member that a UPA-2 would not be good for driving subwoofers because of the lower impedance loads and overall strain on the amp. So this brings me to the XPR-2, it has a lot more power and can handle lower impedance loads than the UPA-2. It'll offer each sub 1000 watts rms.
If it won't work than that'll really suck, I'll have to move onto pro amp offerings. Please say that I have the best idea ever!

Sure. And by the way a UPA-2 drives a pair of 4-ohm subwoofers very nicely, I've done it without issues. But man you'd be wasting a lot of SQ potential using an XPR to drive subwoofers when it's much better suited to driving mains, and any old pro amp will drive your subs just fine.

Staff approval? Do whatever you want. There are few rules in AV.......

The XPR-2 would be like a weapon as a sub amp. Go for it and hang on!!

I know that my UPA-1 makes a very articulate and musical sub amp.

Yeah, you *could* do it. But why would you? Waste of money, IMHO. Buy some nice digital amps for half the price right now - see nCore and similar. And buy your main amp 3 years from now once you have the speakers and can match them properly...

And buy your main amp 3 years from now once you have the speakers and can match them properly... -RW- Here's the thing. I don't have a sub amp right now, so I say to my wife "hey I need to purchase a sub amp". From there she stays out of it and is ok with me buying a sub amp. I'm looking for around 1000 watts per sub anyway. So in three years from now ill have bigger and better subs (8x18" which she has agreed with) I will tell her I need a bigger sub amp and I can move the xpr-2 to my mains and be done with it. If I were to get a smaller sub amp now, one that I wouldn't move to my mains, I would still have to get a bigger sub amp. When I say "hey I want to buy a bigger amp for my mains too" then I have to win an argument with my wife on why. She'll say "they already get loud enough with the receiver power" and I'll be stuck. Oh have this planned out Dan
